At 175 K it might be worth thinking about changing the engine rather than just the timing chain.

Did it break?

If so, you likely have all sorts of associated damage you don't even know about yet.

Get a Haynes or Chilton Manual, have a good hard look, and decide if it is worth it.

Changing a motor in that car is probably easier.

Especially at 175K.

3.1 motor and it hasn't broken yet but I was advised at 175k it is time to chance it. What is your advise?

So , I'm assuming that's around 100,000 miles ,right? If it's a 3.1/3100, up to you. Those V-6 timing chains are very stout and last a LONG time. GL.

While I am a strong proponent of changing the timing chain anytime you need to get that far into an engine, it's really not a maintenance item.

I have seen 3.1's with well over 300,000 KM's on them and they are fine.

dude, its over rated gm bull crap, just run it till it goes, it would probably be the least of your worries on that motor, there freakin animals them motors, if its the 3.1mpfi, it will take one hell of a beating and never let you down, now the 3100sfi, thats a motor i would be worried about, those things imho are worst then the quads.....

I must be missing something here. "That far into the motor"? Are you replacing heads or something? If you're there anyhow, then yea, change it. It's like a $30 part. If not , leave it.

Then obviously you haven't had alot to do with racing in a serious, weekly scenario.

But that is OK!

Having the timing cover off is a fairly regular thing on a serious application in my world.

That is why my cars run pretty well all the time.

But I WAS being a little facitious!

Leave the 3.1 alone. It'll be fine.

Ok here is the scoop, the timing chain is not a problem. In a previous post about my beretta running badly, one of the people that replied said that I should change the change at 175k. I think I will just leave it along based on the response here.

p.s. It would be great if someone could help me on my other post regarding my 93 Beretta running badly.

That was me on the other topic, I thought if dctaz37 was going to keep his car for a long time he should change the chain before it went out. I'm not sure he has the money for a new engine or a rebuild if something goes very wrong. Just trying to look out for you dctaz37.
