St. Louis was founded by French fur traders in 1764. Soon after control over St. Louis and the entire Louisiana Territory transferred to the Spanish, then back to France again. Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory to Thomas Jefferson in 1803. With this transaction, the size of the United States doubled. Nicknamed “The Gateway to the Westâ€Â
