has any one had this problem and maybe some can tell me what might be the problem. first off i have the 3 speed automatic with the 2.8, the car does have a/c.   when the engine is cold or cooled down it will not go into drive,2 or 1 gear ,at times it wont go into reverse but rare for it not to.  if she is warmed up i have no issues, but even if i come out lets say 3-4 hours later i cant get into gear.  i have had to do what might be the worst i could do to the car. i put it into 1st or 2nd gear and rev her up, usually around 3 grand she will kick into gear.  im guessing  tranny rebuild but maybe it is something easy to fix.

GM makes a trany seal conditioner specifically for this issue.  Look around in the past topics or search for conditioner on the forum.  If you find the topic, post that you found it cause I cant search for it until tomorrow.

Hanging up the BDU for good? I had a 90GT(not the same trans,so this may not help) and it lost all the lower gears. I had to do the same thing you are doing to get it home,I was about an hour away from my house. The 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd switches went out. They are on the valve body and easy to get to if the trans is set up the same way. Ok, you say that when it's warmed up there is nothing wrong, so there may be something else going on. What does the fluid look like?

Are you a NCO? Looks like wicked-irocz has more useful info than I do. When will you get back?

last time i drove it there was no problem with the down-shifting. although my father in-law has been driving it lately. it has shut down and left him stranded. they replaced the fuel pump and a couple other items, but it shut down on him again, he had to tow it home.  he says it still has to warm up before it shifts into drive. hopefully he sends it to a shop so it can get a good doing over.  hopefully through all the guys here i can tell him what to tell the mechanics.

I had a shop do my 90 fuel pump and they didn't put in the gasket. The car would run for 20min and then die. I don't know where everybody is, at this time of year the people with the most know how were here everyday. It just sounds like there is not enough pressure in the trans when it is cold. Sorry man, I just drive an auto, I don't work on them.

I already said how to fix it.
It takes a couple hundred miles usually to work its magic.

If that doesnt work it will need to be rebuilt.

We do not need to continue this thread.
