Strange PS trouble

Post by Money pit Beretta »

My power steering pump is new, but it still makes noise. Not the growl that the old one did, but something like it. It is the pump for sure because I pulled the cap off and the noise got louder(after it warms up it's gone). The strange thing is that if I rev the engine up quick the large hose that goes by the alternator jumps and keeps moving as the idle surges twice. After that the hose and the idle are ok. I think this why when I come to a stop the car feels like it is pushing forward until it gets to a full stop. I took it to the same shop that put the pump on(just encase the pump is somehow bad so I could get one for free) and the guy that did the work said it is normal for the hose to do that. I have never seen a PS hose do that ever. Let alone have it mess with the idle, so I know this is not normal. Does anybody know what's going on?

Once again the shop said they could find nothing wrong. The pump wan't making noise on the way home, but the car still pushed until I came to a full stop.

How long has it been happening? (With the new pump)  It's possible there's still some air in the system.  And if you (or a shop) over filled the reservior with fluid the air wouldn't escape.  Try takeing a little bit of fluid out of the reservior.  Not a lot, just a little bit.

The other possiblity is your steering rack could be bad.  But I'd try the fluid first to bleed out any air.

Thanks for the post Bandit. I'll try to take some fluid out. So far the rack acts ok, but I had the same tought. I'll mess around with it today. Last night the idle was at 3000rpm, I shut it off and it went down to a close to normal idle(the TPS is new). There is something strange going on with this car.

Well, the fluid level is were it should be. The TPS was bad and I had to put a old AC one on. I don't buy cheap sensors and I think it was a Borg Warner. It had a spring inside it unlike the AC.

I'd take back the old TPS and tell them it was bad out of the box.

The only thing I can think of is the PS pump is bad.  If the fluid level is good and there's no other leaks I'd say the pump is bad.

Man, you made some changes. That pump is making me mad(that and the shop). That shop will not change it, so I my have to go to another shop and get it done. I had the newer TPS for a few months, so I can't take it back. The pump is only two months old,but I've had bad ones out of the box before.
