89GT gauge instrumet cluster trip odometer

Post by yellow3800 »

My trip od in my 89GT is not resetting.  I think it still spins.  EITHER WAY, I want to fix it.  The backplate is solid to the gauge face lay...  so I'd have to remove the needles to get inside in fix the trip odometer... or I cut into the back of the cluster... just thought of that while typing this... but don't know if I'd cut into something, or cut in the proper locations!

HOW CAN THESE NEEDLES BE PUT BACK AND RETAIN CALIBRATION?

I assume the main answer is that if it breaks , it breaks, and its really not a servicable part because needles can only be calibrated with a bench computer only available when the car was built and that the interface is no longer available.

Same concept applies to people who have made new overlays on their gages... they had to take off needles.

Can I really rely on IGN FWD w/car off and reset them that way?  [that seems a bit crude, but maybe thats the accepted way of doing things!]

Cut out the back of the gauge cluster [sounds fun!]?

thoughts and opinions please

Thank you,

Andy

just go to the j/y and get a new cluster out of an 89gt... maybe you can even find one with less miles on it( not for selling purposes) L0L .. my trip odometer quit working years ago... doesn't bother me--- just right your milage down if you're trying to figure out m/p/g
