CAI help please

Post by Money pit Beretta »

I have a Styluss CAI and I thought I could put it on without instructions. I have the photo of 3X00's CAI, so I used it to see where the tubes went. I cut out the hole large enough for the tube, but nothing more. I moved the battery tray over some, but that was not enough. As I took the bolts off the tray the clip nuts broke. I can get new ones though. How big does the hole for the intake need to be? I think I'm going to make the holes in the tray bigger so that it can be moved over for more room. My K&N filter is too large and I have to buy a smaller one. What did you guys do to make it fit?
Boy do I feel dumb, this should be easy.

Well, the smaller filter is on the way. Again the tray was moved over some more and it's still not enough. I had some trouble with a big filter on my 90GT with a Tranzgenic. I got that one to fit though. I must add that I have a CAI that is for a MAF and a extra pipe to use it for a non MAF set up. I was trying to think ahead for the 3400 swap.

Why would you need a maf for a 3400 swap? Maf's are only necessary if you are upgrading to OBDII like I did.

Well if your only doing a 3400 then no, you don't "have to" be able to tune... many will run a 3400 on a 94-95 ecm just fine... I did for a long time. Hell I sprayed a 100 shot on it and it was fine. I only went OBDII when I was planning on doing the headers and the Milzy stage 1 cam... obviously after that the Milzy cam didn't last long in that car since I bought the new one.

BUT yes it is a good thing to have that option, you can gain some power that's not available by using the stock ecm... Timing can help a good amount.

We have talked about this before, there will be a cam(there are some new roller cams out now buy the way).

I may have to make the hole larger for the intake. Anybody got any pics of what the hole should look like?

A lightly-modded 3400 will run splendidly on the stock OBD1.5 ECM. Mine trapped over 93mph on the factory tune.

I just mocked up my 95 CAI on my 91 and it look like I might have issues with my large K&N. Wasn't there a part no. floating around somewhere with a K&N that fits well?

I had thoughts of asking you how you got yours on. Glad to know I'm not the only nut to buy a huge filter. I did it on the 90 also and had to bend the horn out of the way to make it fit(lol). The 90's was a filter that had a cone filter in the top pointing down to the tube(thought it would be best for flow). The 95's was an X-Stream. At the time I bought it I thought there was more room in there and that there was nothing in the way of the flow(washer fluid tank is in the way). Crazy thing cost me 95 bucks!

If the new one fits, I'll give you the part number.

Got the new filter, but it's not on as of yet. It is a RU-3700 K&N. I'll cut the hole larger Friday to keep the tube from rubbing on all that sharp metal. The next update should say that I got it on. If it doesn't, I feel that I should be banned for 30 days!

No need for that, it's done. I had to cut the washer on one of the battery tray bolts to get enough room. The new filter fit great! As you can see I also have a new EGR. I had to use my 90's IAT because the hole was too big for the 95 one. The wires to the IAT are very tight, but I think it will be ok.
