New problem. Recently, my car has gotten to the point where it WILL NOT CHARGE. The battery is NEW, the alternator is NEW. Checked EVERYTHING. Only 1 thing i found, was the 1 wire down by the starter was broken, so I fixed that and no change. PLEASE help me. I miss my car.

The large red wire at the alternator... Does it have 12v constant? if not you blew a fusable link on that wire and you need to replace it, or just run a new 8 gauge wire from the alternator directly to the postive terminal of the battery... You can go to the starte like factory but going to the battery is quicker and easier to reach.

That would be the first thing I would say to check.

its got like ~11.8 and drops over time due to it not getting charge. I was thinking that one of those 3 links was blown so I guess ill replace all those wires there..

I tried running my own wire from the alt to the battery, and it still didn't work...

Which wires are you checking? Not the ones on the plug... I mean the ONE wire on the stud. Thats the main charge wire. The ones on the back are for the gauge, regulator and ground.

And just because the alternator is New doesnt mean its bad.

You do not need the car running to check the wire I'm talking about... Keep the car OFF and check that wire voltage.

yea the one on the stud. The big one. put the red end on the stud and the black end on the UIM and i got ~11.8. this is my 3rd alternator in a month on this car. :(

Also, can you tell me which color wires are what? I'm assuming the ground is black? What about the other two?

Ok, well car running that post still read 11.8v? If so then the regulator or something in the alternator fried again... There should be two different readings. Car running that should be at least 13.5v and car off it should be around 12 or the same as the battery voltage.

Going by a 1995 wiring diagram, which I would only assume to be the same since they never really changed the alternator wiring,

It says, Pin S is Red for Voltage Sensing Input, Pin F is Brown for Turn On input "Hot in run" (that goes to fuse pannel Fuse 4) and then Pin L is Brown also according to this, and thats another Turn On input also hot in run(Goes to Fuse 9), and also feeds the cluster gauge.

SO check fuses 4 an 9... they MAY be the same as yours. I'm not sure. 4 is a 10 amp and 9 is a 20

Nice thanks. Ill go look over the wiring again and see.

the output voltage off the alternator could go as high as 14.4 v DC. that is an extreme high number. it all depends on the voltage regulator.
a healthy(new as mentioned) battery will have no less then 12 v dc..

and yes those main wires that go to the starter do corrode with age. and the fuse links do blow.

an electricians 2 cents.
