Transmission Problem 4T60e
Transmission Problem 4T60e
So today I had my car parked in the garage at work, I made it 100% fine with no issues. When I went to leave I put the car in D and the door locked and I didn't feel the transmission engage. When I pressed the gas nothing.. moved it into OD same thing. So I put in Reverse and feel it engage and start moving backwards. So i go through D and OD again still nothing. I slid it down into L and felt it engange I took off, it definitely felt wierd, as if it weren't going to go at first, then it took off. Now its in L and wont shift out of 2nd for obvious reasons (being in L) as I started to get moving I slotted it into OD and it picked up 3rd gear and eventually was shifting normally between 2, 3, and 4 with the touque converter working correctly as soon as I dropped below 15mph I would have to slot the gear selector back to L in order to get the transmission to engage and eventually slot it back into OD or D (both worked) once I was above 30.
Given the description does anyone think this is a mechanical or electronic issue, because I didn't hear one grind, bang, thud, or anything on my drive to make me think there was something mechanically wrong with the internals of the transmission. I can't read the codes myself as I don't have the right kind of reader, but the Service Engine Light is on. The car has 126k, but the transmission should only have about 90k on it (previous owner replaced)
Does anyone think I should replace a Shift Solenoid and try throwing parts at it if I don't know exactly what the issue is or just bring it to my mechanic and wait?
I'm looking at you Jon.....
Or anyone else who might have some insight, I appreciate it.

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
Definately check code first, But it might not shed much light on the subject...
Shift solenoids would prevent shifting more than inital gear engagement, so if it shifted fine after you got moving then those are probably ok... BUT the initial engagement is kind of odd...
Have you changed/checked fluid level lately? Low line pressure could result in this issue.
Bring your car to Autozone, or Advance Auto, they will typically do a OBDII code check for free.

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
Its a 95, so free scan checks are out of the question. I'm going to bring it up to my mechanic in a minute to see if he can schedule me in sooner rather than later to diagnose this.
I did a fluid/ filter change at 92k when I bought the car, I never did check the trans fluid after my drive. So I'll probably check it out after drive it to the garage. It just seems so wierd that every other gear functions %100.
I guess I'll just have to wait for the word from my mecanic.
BTW I'm not a complete clueless tard when it comes working on cars, I did my LIMG, I swapped my clutch on my original GTZ. I just don't know the first thing about Automatic Transmissions, and I don't want to just throw parts at the car if they're not going to fix it.
I like Woody's idea, who's got that extra 5 speed hanging around... and while were at it my oil is getting chocolately (again) so might as well just put in a 3400...

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
I thought you were 96 for some odd reason.
Yeah code check and fluid check is all I can think of... next thing in line would be something to do with the valve body and the main check valve that selects the gears.

Buy StuntManMike's car on Bstuff for the measly $1500 or whatever it is and swap drivetrains. Seriously. It has an LSD & headers too.

He would have to cut his floor out to fit mikes headers... he never modified them to fit.
That car was also driven really hard for its life.

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
The transmission fluid was at a good level, so I brougt it up and explained everything to my mechanic, knowing full well he doesn't like to rebuild automatic transmissions, but just hoping he'd take a look / check the codes to at least diagnose it. He just gave me a card with a number to a shop almost an hour away, and suggested to have it towed, and he really isn't just some mechanic, my dad has been friends with him for as long as I can remember. I'd say he's more a family friend who just happens to be a mechanic and have his shop within a golf swing of my parents house.
So he obviously doesn't want anything to do with it. I don't know what the crap I'm going to do with it, but I'd like to figure it out soon.
I still need a diagnosis / code read, so it looks like the car is taking a trip on the old flatbed whenever I set up an appointment at the transmission shop.

I've never, ever seen a shop that wouldn't rape you for $100 if you tell them you want the codes read. This guy must not like the greenbacks.

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
Just got off the phone with the transmission shop, he told me it needs to be rebuilt gave me a quote for $1500 to $1800.
I'm totally screwed, and have no idea what I'm going to do.

The converter does not come with this trans, you have to ask for it. I just bought a W body 4T60e from them and the total cost was $1,095. That was for the trans, converter and shipping.

Re: Transmission Problem 4T60e
Let me know what you need, we can do 1 of 2 things... Get a rebuild kit for your current trans, OR pick one up with about 30k on it from Linders Inc, and I can swap it in for you. You'll gain a 3.33 gear ratio and a better stall converter.NewNann wrote:Just got off the phone with the transmission shop, he told me it needs to be rebuilt gave me a quote for $1500 to $1800.

I'll post a link to their listings soon.
Ok, I lied...
$200 for a 59k trans...

Buick Century
59,000
$200 Linder's Inc. USA-MA(Worcester) E-mail 1-800-521-8000
There are tons of trasmissions in CT too for under 450 with low miles on them.
Search for 1999 Buick Century All those will fit with just swapping over your side cover, and your car will still shift right and I'll try to find a 29 tooth tone ring so your speedo is not off.
PM me with what you want to do.
