OBD1 to OBD2 possible?

Post by Cks69 »

Hey there peeps.......my bud has a 1994 beretta, I have a 1996, and I always use my OBD2 scan tool for all my needs.

His is ODB1 if I am not mistaken, so every time he has a check engine light on he has to go to a shop where the have an OBD1 scan tool.....

Now, my question is, is it possible to swap the connector and re-assign the cables to an OBD2 style connector and make it work just like that ?

Or how would we do an OBD1 to OBD2 swap...??

We can get a hold of a ECU from a 1996 model from the local ecology AW for a few buck, in case it needs to be swapped out.....

Also, would my OBD2 scan tool act, read and reset dtc's wit the OBD1 to OBD2 swap...?

Is it possible??

Thanks!!!

Yes its possible, but its a little more involved than you think.

Items you need to swap/add.

96 Maf sensor
96 ABS computer
96 Brake Master Cylinder for ABS
96 Fan (just a nice swap to do, its thinner)
96 Glove box
96 ECM bracket
96 Fresh Air Vent for Hvac system.
Modified 96 Engine bay harness, OR Both Engine bay and interior (then you need a 96 cluster too)

And I think thats about it

I have a write up on here I think...

I added the write up on what modifications need to be done to the harness of a 96 donor to work with your 94-95 interior harness...

I'll be adding pics soon so if you think you want to take this on you should be able to get all the info needed here.

The biggest advantage to this is NOT to just read codes, but with a 96 you can tune the ECM by swapping out the ecm for a 97 Monte carlo one if you choose to use HPTuners, OR a 97 Venture ECM if you buy a DHP Powrtuner.

Hrm......... sounds fun....

Finding a donor for all those parts are not a problem....

The local Ecology Auto Wrecking and Pick Your Part have plenty of these rides, so no problem on the parts....

The write up and the pics would be killer...........

Oh, and one other thing.........."THE GLOVE BOX"!?!?!?!?!?!? why that..........(just seems kinda odd)

The ecm and mounting bracket are larger so you need to get the box that has the end cut off at an angle and not straight...

Yes it is an odd ball item :)

Same with the Fresh Air vent thats also different for the size of the ECM.

The write up is pinned in the FAQ section on what needs to be done to a harness Pics now uploaded.
