Re: It all goes downhill at once!
Look at your upcoming engine project as a way to keep your mind off your ex. That's how I ended up with a 6spd and a 3400... haha
That sucks on many levels though. Are the cylinder heads are shot?

Ya come on Barry!!
You are the standard bearer for those poor 5-speed folks trying oh so desperately to keep up to my "oh-so-why-would-you-even consider-that" 3t40 POS??.
You are one of the good guys and you'll get through it and be better for it all!
asylummotorsports@yahoo.ca ANYTIME!!

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
It's not about being faster for me... Speaking for myself only it is about enjoying my car more. A 5 speed is just more fun to drive, and they handle better because of the weight.
If a 5 speed swap was an impossibility I would have sold my 93 more than likely.

Auto is not for me with this car. Bottom line.
Pulled the heads off, there still usable. Cylinder 1 has a slightly tweaked valve and some knicks in the chamber.
However, the block is cracked! The cylinder wall cracked into a coolant port! Huge gash in the cylinder..
Pics coming eventually. Camera cable is mia

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
Picking up new motor tomorrow tomorrow hopefully. 240 bucks and like 8k miles.
Plans for this one is valve springs, gasket matched intakes, then mod the block for the 5-speed and swap all my parts over.
Also gonna cut some gm exhaust gaskets apart to work with my headers.
Do you think I can re-use the LIM gaskets if I rtv the valley again? They look re-usable... kinda.

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
I understand the gaskets aren't exactly cheap (inexpensive) but do you really want to take a chance?

No cam? Dang, 240 bucks for a 8K engine is cheap. Yeah, I would think you could reuse the gaskets if you tighten the bolts down more. As Eric said, I wouldn't take the chance.

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
Dont worry about gasket matching. The gains are very minimal and you can do everything else you posted without pulling the intakes.

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
Yeah after thinking about it, im gonna skip the gasket matching and just do springs.
And reccomendation on a good set of springs? My old ones started to float around 6200...

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
The cam, springs and stuff is ordered!
Just don't know what car it's going to be yet as I may just leave the '92 as is, and use my "spare" 12K 3500 for the new parts.
If I can find a Cobalt or G5 cheap enough that will be the project.
If not, Anyone want a 154,xxx mile quad engine and trans?
Barry for a stock cam the LS Springs are plenty. If you are going bigger then the Comp 28986 ones will handle up to .600 lift (.660 coil bind) and they need no machining or any special parts.
Both are available on 60*V6 (WOT-TECH Store) and the prices are quite competitive.

Re: It all goes downhill at once!
Go with the 986 springs, they are much nicer to the valve train... LS ones are harder in some instances and will cause more chain stretch. Also as noted 986's use stock seals and seats and retainers and such... I'm using all stock parts with them and buzz 6800 on a regular basis without any float noticeable.
Re: It all goes downhill at once!
I like that Jon, I dont really feel like chaging the seals and everything. I only want to rev to 6500 anyway just to try it.
986's it is.
