Gas Tank Straps

Post by TBeegan »

I need gas tank straps for a 1990 GTZ. So far all I keep hearing from all of the auto parts stores is, "discontinued."
Please help. I love my Betty. I want to keep her on the road forever.

TBeegan can you go to the dealer and get a part number? It's spring so many of us have rain off and on making it hard to get to the JY. Hang in there.

Just buy new ones. They are less than 20 bucks. rockauto.com

They arent listed for a 90. I'm not sure if the 95 ones would work for the 90 tank.

I'm assuming you have a plastic tank correct?

It is the plastic tank and will be bigger straps. It might be best to go to previous or later model year tank configuration.

I think with slight effort, the 95 straps can work.

Those ones won't fit a 90.

They are too short and attach differently at the front end.

I know that over the years the tanks are not the same. It took me forever to find a new plastic tank for my 90. I had thoughts of a metal tank swap, but I found out that I would have to move my exhaust to use one. So I'm not sure if the straps from another year will work. But I could be wrong.

Weren't there cavy tanks that used the same setup and straps? I seem to recall someone saying that once in one of my own project threads. I have been doing a bit of research, didn't realize it was the GTZs that had the plastic tanks. Apparently they switched back to steel in 1993. That was the first one that had them listed on RockAuto, and its the same one I ordered for mine last year. I have not found anyplace that has them for the early 90s models..... :S

My 91 came with a plastic tank and I switched to the steel with the newer straps. I dont remember if I kept the straps for the plastic one or not. I'll have to look.

:runsies: I found straps off of a newer beretta. but not off a GTZ. GTZs are next to impossible to find at any of the junk yards! Only the longer (driver side) was able to work. they are thinner and I might have to fabricate them on my own.

None of the dealers around me have them. They are discontinued. Which really irks me, because they look like such easy parts to make.

Well you have to ask the dealer for the number. Mine does it all the time for me.

Did your dealer say they could be found at VPI? Check with them on that. Discontinued does not mean all gone... They just stop selling them and Vintage Parts Inc. acquires the stock and sells them to people. If you get the Part Number you can try VPI's website to see if they have them.
