Your looking at this situation ass backwards man.
You would rather buy an engine with high mileage, from joe blow with zero warranty - just because you can hear it running, than a scrap yard that is in the business, who has a reputation on the line, and will offer a warranty, so even IF for some reason there is an issue, they will GIVE you another engine?
There are tons of low mile engines out there, for cheap.. Post your location and I'll find you one.

I guess I miss interpreted this statement then.jeff540 wrote:Giving up and selling the car????? Dude! I am so there.I just want something turn key.My Z26 was the worst car purchase i have ever made.I mean granted it was only 500 bucks, but it has been down for 7 years.I really would like to have it running before it starts getting to cold to work on it. I am in Tennessee so the weather stays nice until about november, then by middle of february it is getting warmer all over again.going up to 95 degrees again today.
LIMG yes had issues but if you saw the problem happen, such as oil/coolant mix and then repaired the issue, or brought you car in to have the gaskets replaced before they cracked then the engine would still be fine.
I love how you keep bringing Honda into this conversation. Do you really want to get this car fixed or do you really want just a Honda? Make up your mind. You care, yet a honda is better, and GM sucks and Gaskets blow.
I'm so confused. Everyone has given their 2 cents on this and you still think a high mileage motor that you can hear running will be better... If that's what you want then good luck, we've offered our opinions and given you the SAME resource that we've ALL used to purchase the motors that are in our cars. That's all we have for you, the rest is up to you.

That's a whole lot of work to find out you got a bad engine.
I am from Dayton,Tn.37321. see if you can locate me a good one.for cheap. I have a local to me junkyard looking for me as of June.he told me to give him a couple of months to locate a good one.and that's just a replacement from a 95.and a 3100.

So you do a compression test on the engine before you put it in.
The junkyard isn't out to screw you over. If they were sending out bad engines, no one would buy from them anymore. Then it would be a matter of time until they are out of business. All the big yards test the engines before they even pull them out of the car.

Damage was already done when I bought the car.so NO I did not see the problem happen.

Yup,will never own another GM.my next car is going to be,you guessed it another Honda.

Ok, first search I do on car-part. For a 2003 grand am 3400. Took me 10 seconds

You do a compression test with the engine on the ground?
Never bought a engine from a yard, how much is the shipping to get one from car-part?
Thanks for the reply

OK,now you got my attention, just looking for a 3100 that will be plug and play simple.don't want a 3400,do not know what modifications I would need to do to make it work.3400beretta wrote:Ok, first search I do on car-part. For a 2003 grand am 3400. Took me 10 seconds

Re: 2003 malibu 3100 in a 95 z26
Car-part is a search engine that searches 1000's of yards across north america. I searched ones close to you, and that was the lowest mile engine that popped up for a good price. Call that yard and ask them if they will deliver for free (many will) or how much it will cost to deliver (wont be much).
And yes, hook up your starter, pull all the plugs out, and do a compression test on the ground if you are that worried about it.

You don't want a shortblock. Then you have to buy gaskets, and you will end up spending WAY too much money.
The problem with finding an old 3100 is that you just aren't going to find one with low mileage. Thats why we all suggested to go with a newer engine - they are cheap and you can still find them with decent mileage.

I was never trying to jump on you. I'm just tired of trying to help and then the person gives up. All cars have their problems man. You know what's needed on this one. If you get another you will not know what you are getting into.
The yards that are not near you are out to make money as are the ones that are near you. They should be more than happy to ship, they sell more that way. Who is going to drive 2 hours to pick up an engine? Not many.

Re: 2003 malibu 3100 in a 95 z26
Ok let me clarify myself here since once again I'm not understood.
In the beginning of this thread you asked about a 3100 from a 03 Malibu working in your car
I gave you info about motor differences gasket differences and power differences... And two of the only major changes necessary to make a 3400 work in a Beretta... Timing cover and maybe ream the AC compressor hole. Other than that, Just use all of your sensors and accessories on the new motor, it's been said tons of times on this board.
You then come back with a 3100 from a 94 GP with 180k on the clock.
we tell you the downfalls of the pre 2000 3100's and how they really lack power due to the older design, and ONCE again question why finding something with god awful mileage on it. You also get praised for not ditching the car...
You come back with
You never intially stated what you want and you contradict yourself quite often... You "Care" about this car but you always throw some dig in there to talk about how you just want to replace it with a Honda.
SO bottom line... What do you want?
Do you care enough to take the "gamble" as you think it is, and buy a $500 3400 from a yard that has to ship it to you and has the potential to last much longer due to low miles? Or are you THAT afraid that they will screw you over so its worth MORE to you to just get a local high mileage motor for the same price and slap it in and be done with it since in the end you really don't care just as long as it runs now?
THAT'S what I'm trying to figure out. We've shown you all the resources just used to find the cheaper motor, it just seems like your not digging far enough due to lack of interest, HENCE why I think/believe you really don't care and just want it done.
We are trying to help but every answer we give seems to be just not enough, or too "risky" for you. Maybe if we understand the end result you want then we can adjust our input to fit your desired result.

found a 3100 from a 2003 malibu, what am i looking at to see if it will work in my 95z26.TIA.
You received a reply on why on earth you were thinking of using a motor of that mileage.it's got 123,557 miles on it he is asking 650.00 can hear run
ALONG with a link to the same site that 3400Beretta just used to find the "motor" that got your attention. Why in heavens name would you pay that much money for a motor with that mileage?
Might be worth a couple hundred bucks TOPS!
http://www.car-parts.com
Have a look there. Hell 3400's and 3500's can be had for as little as $400 at times.

I interpret this as a statement of I just want the damn car on the road and I dont care about getting the larger 3400 or not, I juts want a turn key and run fix.Giving up and selling the car?????
