Yeah this is the car that wrecked my arm, and I just finished up about 95% of the fabrication last night.

How did you bend the steel?

LOL that's the funny part... We wanted a similar fuel protection hoop as we had before, but it would have ended up being 90* corners if we didn't bend it. Currently we do not own a pipe bender, so I just used the torch and slowly worked my way around the raidus till I had something that worked.

I was trying to have him get the pipe bender from Harbor Freight just to see if it would work, but since it only had Die's for the center and not the outer edge he thought it would kink the pipe, and it also didn't have one of the important sized die's we use for pipe. All the ones from Speedway motors and such that are bottle jack powered are like 700+ minus the Die sets.

Granted yes that's NOT the proper way to do it for something that will be protecting you such as the main hoop, but that bar is simply there to prevent another car from going up and over the top of your fuel cell so its really just a secondary bumper.

Now I see why you were cutting that square tube. I was sure at a loss on why you would be cutting something like that.

it was only necessary to protect the cell, which some guys don't even have so with the way I did it I think it's perfectly fine and will hold. But yes I agree for a cage you should bend it properly, and 800+ for a bender to do one pipe wasnt worth it. and it takes alot of skill to bend a cage and figure out where the bends should be without wasting a bunch of pipe.

I have tons of pictures of working on that car. Only this year have we concentrated more on chassis setup over engine stuff... the year before was are first year with a crate motor and this year was our second... So it was nice to never have to touch the thing, but years prior I remember pulling heads, changing cams, timing cams, tweaking carburetors, and messing with who knows what else.

Next year may get interesting... He wants to move to a Modified car which is an open wheel version vs the full body car, but when doing that he now has to travel to some tracks and that puts me in a hard place with my work schedule. There is also a lot more work involved in those and quite possibly a lot of money if something breaks, which happens easily with no fenders there to protect stuff.

I had a friend of a friend run in modified and it cost alot to be in the front. That class got to high for him and his best was mid pack. It's better to run in the front in a lower class than the rear of a higher one.
I now remember you posting a pic of the crate motor here once.

Use to share shop space with a guy who ran ASA sealed spec. It was fun but all suspension and setup, no real engine work. Helped bend a ton of tube because he always got a little over zealous. Its not as hard with a jig, but as you said, lots of wasted tube when you first start tryin haha.

BTW i had that jack well actually 4 of them that your using under the whole subframe and they suck. within 6 months they either leaked or weren't able to lift anymore.

That jack is actually quite old... and I've mastered the bleeding procedure which is 90% of the issues of it lifting. Its never leaked either.

And thats not a subframe you doof... That THE FRAME... lol well the front clip of it. Full frame car remember

yeah yeah i knew it was the front clip i just had sub frame on the mind and that's what got typed lol.

i gave up on that kind of jack and watching the whole frame of the jack flex when jacking the car up wasn't cool either. i ended up with the 4ton black one you might have seen when you were over before. haven't had to do anything to it yet, so far it's the only thing from sears i haven't had to bring back multiple times.

one of the aluminum jacks i had just stopped lifting. never leaked a drop. the first one gave out after we put the engine in at my house.
