Recomendations on new turbo

Want to know how to get more out of your Beretta? Or have a mod you would like to share?

Dusty already said its a full T3, and from what I recall thats exactly what it looks like. If you are not getting full boost till 3500rpms with that dinky turbo, FORGET that one on bstuff.

I would get the t3/t4 50 trim but with a stage 3 .48 a/r hot side. Should be a nice upgrade over what you have. But then again, what do I know.

I really was going for a nice 400 hp turbo meant mainly for drag racing there. I didn't really think you would need to rebuild it cause I wouldn't with only 10000 miles on it.

If you are looking to keep your boost rpm potential around the same I will stay with what I said for a compressor and I'll agree with Rodney on the stage 3 .48 A/R turbine.

If you want the rpm to be lower even still, stay with a standard .48 A/R turbine like you have.

I have been contemplating rebuilding the motor this winter as well. Rex gave me a gasket set with the car when I got it but I don't know if it is complete because it was opened and could have lost one in the boxes travels. I have to find a contents list and go through it.
I would see if you can come up with a set of valve seals from the pack he gave you... I wouldn't dig into the motor yet if you have done compression and leak down and both have come up fine. I would assume that valve seals are something you could do with just removing maybe the cam tower's at most. I'm not familiar with how the quad's are setup. But then again you could just have a large oil leak going into the exhaust turbine side rather than the charge side...

That would be just about impossible Jon.. as the pressure on the exhaust side is almost always higher than the compressor side.

Ok, well I'm unfamiliar with a turbo setup, I just got one and I'm trying to learn about it. But either way his car smokes pretty badly so I'm just guessing at what it could be, and since his charge pipes aren't soaked with oil then the next place would be a oil leak on the exhaust side, or valve seals on the head.

I don't know much about the motor either. The farthest I have disassembled it is taking of the intake and exhaust manifolds and that is not much at all. I have never taken off the cam towers or anything. One time I found a video online about how to rebuild the quad 4 but have not been able to find it again.

The car has always smoked a little on start up but recently it has gotten a lot worse. Once the oil pressure drops and the car is warmed up it does not smoke but for the first 5-10 minutes it smokes a lot now. I have it away for the winter now so I will decide what I want to do and get started. I already started taking out the seats and console so I can get to the heater core easily.

The timing cover will need to come off to get at the bolts that hold the cam covers in place. To do that, you will need to pull the timing chain and cam gears off. Then there's a seal sandwiched between the timing HOUSING and the cam carrier that should be replaced as you dismantle it. The process is lengthy and the environment is not ideal once you stuff your hands/arms in there. Probably be best to outsource it to China. :p

When I first got my turbo I had a bad exhaust seal and it leaked about half a quart in 500 miles. It would only happen at higher oil pressure levels. I would say to check the turbo and the valve seals. I know you have oil going out the exhaust. I don't know how much. How much oil are you losing?

I am losing about the same amount and it smokes until the oil pressure drops to about 40. I am going to look into both things. They are two of many things on my winter to do list.

Disassembled the turbo and it is definitely leaking from there. I can see it through the blades and it is also on the lip.

amen to that. id have to say honestly, the hardest part is getting the timing cover/ housing off. never working on a quad before, doing the head gasket on mine was definatly not a fun job. just make sure to remove the 4 bottom bolts that bolt the housing to the oil pan (i believe its 4). those are what most people forget and snap it in half. then the rest is pretty straight forward. as much as you know about these cars, i dont think you'll have a problem at all.

ooh and for the timing cover, 10mm ratchet wrench is your friend! never really used em before untill i had to reach all of those bolts. especially the ones that are on the back bottom corner and right above the opening in the wheel well.

Thanks for the info.

Luckily it looks like I will not have have to tear into the motor. The turbo is clearly leaking oil so I ordered a new one that should be here in a week or so.

I also found videos on youtube about the quad. Search quad 4 training and it is about an hour long video on the quad.

Im sure your glad you dont have to crack it open. Ive just gotten in the habit of pulling them when i have to muck with the top end. It doesnt save any time, but working on it is much more enjoyable and saves you money if you have a cuss box.

What turbo did you end up going with?
