Ok I just bought a alternator pulley for my Ecotec from a guy that has been making pulleys for J-Bodys for a few years. It's stock size and half the weight. I will post some pics up this weekend.
I'm trying to talk him into making some for Berettas. He wanted me to check here to see if anybody likes the idea. I'm asking for the alt and power steering pulleys.
Stock weight on the Ecotec alt pulley is 6 ounces, his is 3 ounces. Well made and look good. The cost was 50 bucks for it. They are made from T6-6061 aluminum and are hard coated A4 clear.

I plan to send him the stock alternator and a PS pulley for specs. It may end up as a group buy first. Or I may be a beta tester for all of you. My car is a DD, so they will be well tested.

We may be able to get a lower cost on a group buy.

I'd be game for an alternator pulley, PS probably not so much because of the pain in the ass of PS pump pulley removal and install. Though putting a billet pulley back on would surely be easier than the damn plastic units.

PS pulley would have to be larger to change anything motion wise since those plastic ones are hard to beat weight wise... and I'm not so sure the room is there... Same with the alternator it would have to be larger to slow down the accessory if thats what your shooting for.

Unless your trying to speed them back up after doing a UDP, but then that process will only negate half of the gains you got from installing the UDP to begin with.

I'm not a fan of changing all the pulleys over since some you don't really gain much, or they don't change much.

Rule of thumb to remember... Smaller Crank pulley means the items move slower, hence one of the gains of an UDP, your slowing down the accessories... now when you put a smaller pulley on any of the accessories it now speeds up that accessory, so you would need something larger to slow it down to gain more of a change, but since some who use an UDP already complain about the power drop when the alternator isn't spinning fast enough.

The only gain I see in any of these would be if he can get them to all weight half as much as the originals. Dropping that rotating weight is a good thing no matter how fast the item is spinning.

I would LOVE an OEM sized crank pulley that is aluminum with a dampening ring on it so it weighs half as much as stock... I do not care about the size of it.

Also the only issue here is MRZ already makes an alternator pulley for our cars.

yeah but switchin them over in nicely done engine bay would be nice too

Dang I thought for sure my old 90GT had a steel PS pulley and this car did too. Just went out and checked and it's plastic. So yeah the PS pulley would be out. MRZ's pulley is an overdrive to go with their underdrive crank pulley. That is why I like the idea of a stock size alternator pulley. I could ask him about the crank pulley. He has made some. That would be tough to do with a rubber ring. I'll ask though.
Yeah I was shooting for a drop in the rotating weight. LOL I just thought the repalcement plastic pulley for the PS pump was just another crap part from Dorman.
I see no way that someone could get the water pump pulley any lighter.

On a side note I have the MRZ underdrive and a March overdrive. After talking to you 3X00 I don't think I'll be using them. The March overdrive pulley is steel and feels like two pounds vs the Ecotec pulley. I'm sure it's more like one pound. So would you be in for a alternator pulley?

He did have a batch that was black in color. With that all the pulleys would match.

Weight aside, if all the accessory pulleys were like that, it would sure look sharp under the hood.

MRZ iirc has had some users tell him when swapping over they noticed the pulley was the same size as the one on their car... I guess it depends on which year you have and what alternator quite possibly...

No argument that it would make the engine bay look sharp, but lets remember here... We can only see our alternator, ps, and wp pulley's... the rest are buried under the fun of a FWD setup :) I was sad that I never saw my FFP pulley when I had it... But now I run a stock one with the dampener.

Ok, that's a little strange. On the site it's listed as an overdrive. So you just take a chance on what your getting?

With FFP do you need to run an oversize pulley? Would make sense to my alternator output being low... lol

I really should keep this moving. I have never done this before so I'm having a little trouble. Next weekend I'll take the pulley off my old alt and try to send it to Mike.

Oh and he said that a crank pulley with a rubber ring would cost over 700 bucks. Way too much for us.

Yeah I know... MRZ makes one without the dampener and I'm not fond of running that, and there was a R&D period on 60degreev6.com with some company supposed to make one with a dampener and I even donated my old FFP pulley to the cause... that went no where and fell off the face of the earth.

I'll stick with my stock pulley... I just wish someone would make something just lighter than what we have... I don't care if its undersized or not, just make it weigh less, that alone would net some gains.

As far as Z26-T's question, you do not have to run a larger alternator pulley when using the FFP UDP, but yes that will definitely help fix any charging issues at idle, but just remember the point of the UDP is to make the items spin slower and take away less effort to turn, but if you put a larger pulley on the alternator your negating that gain on that item, now you only benefit on the PS pump, water pump, and AC when running.
