Ok...here we go!!!

Post by ronaconda »

Alrighty guys...found me a 25k mile replacement engine a few weeks ago and it is now up on an engine stand and partially torn down. Dont ask what i am doing; you all are just going to have to wait until Indy to see. I was very happy after i pulled the heads and saw what i saw!!! I would say that my $200 bucks was well spent!!!

Here is what i saw. The other three looked the very same. No ridge at the top of the cylinder and the hone marks are still visible.

And what the bottom of the heads looked like...

Well, with only 25k on it, that's how it's suppose to look! But it's cool that you got a good deal and didn't get ripped off! Looks like a great foundation for your super uber secret plan!

I had been wondering what was up with your car and the status of an engine swap or whathaveyou. Glad to see you got a good engine for $200. One question that you don't have to answer unless you want - is that a 2.8 or 3.1? Either way, hope to see a 3x00 top end, or at least a cam and some port work on this thing!

Keep us updated. :)

its a 3x00 with the heart shaped cylinder head, but it looks as if its a pre 2000 motor since it still has the pushrod guides.

You better put a Large Port upper setup on that engine!

Wouldn't it have to be a pre-96 motor to have pushrod guides?

Actually if it has steel pushrod guides, it's a pre-2003 engine... My guess is a 2000-2002 3400!

I stand corrected by Cliff... it was mid 96 they swapped the 3100's over to roller fulcrum rockers.

scd88ga, I don't know where you got your info but they ditched the guides when they went to the roller rockers vs the stamped ones. Not one 3400 I have ever taken apart has had stamped rockers... I've pulled apart an 00 02 and 05 engine, ALL identical minus some changes on the lower intake and upper. This also reminds me of the need to clearance a 3400 lower intake to allow fitment of those older pre 96 stamped rockers, Hell I did it once I should have remembered that.

Not enough angle on the pic to see if the heads have the notches, but if its a 96 motor he may be able to swap to the roller rockers and then use a 3x00 large upper intakes.

here you're talking about 3500 swap but that doesn't look like a 3500...

Yep...i did talk about a 3500....

So i am in the process of tearing it down and everything is going absolutely great until i get the crank out and look at it on the bench under much better lightning...the crank is nothing more than a very heavy paper weight. Number 2 journal is scarred. It might be able to be polished out but i'll weight the pros/cons/$$$ of polishing this one or finding a new or reconditioned one.

Stay tuned....

have it turned 5 or 10 under and oversize the main bearings. I also have a 3400 crank with one dink on a rod journal. can probably be smoothed out and ignored.

I also have pinkys 3100 crank and ole reds 3100 one, I used a 94 3100 crank since I had it polished up before I got my second 3400. that's the were the spare crank with the dink came from.
