My W41 GTZ --Update 5/2 Shifter Pics
So as many of you know who i am from Bstuff, and since my thread was over there, and i never started one on here, im am posting up my progress on my car to keep the community posted for those curious.
Some of you may remember that i had an awesome turbo build planned for my car, but have since scraped the idea and am keeping her n/a. Tonight is the first time in a long time i have put my hands on my car and really done any work on her. I have had so many other things going its not even funny. Anyone want a 91 Saab 9000 turbo btw? LOL Anyways....
Tonight, i got my car's motor unharnessed and fluids drained. Only thing i have left to do to get the motor out is yank the axles and unpin the mounts and out she comes. I have a full Felpro gasket kit to reseal the motor top to bottom, front to back as well as new head bolts. For those that dont know, i put the motor together with Victor Rienz gaskets when i overhauled it and the motor has been leaking out of every orifice it can for the last 25k out of the 28-30k miles of the engines life. Im also installing a new clutch, flywheel, near mint condition shift cables, and filling all my motor mounts and building a stout front mount.
I also acquired some W41 motor from a deal i did with a friend, so the cams as well will be going in the car as well Sadly there was no cover for the motor. So my car, with the 3.94 trans, will be about as close to W41 spec as it can be. Now, on to the pics....
How my poor car looks right now (so dirty
)

The motor and trans ready to come out

Found a quad jack shaft to replace mine that has "welded" itself to my passenger axle

Re: My GTZ Returns!
Shift cables, came from a low mile 91 Quad442 in the yard

The new flywheel and gaskets

I ordered a clutch from Amazon, thanks to 3400Modified for pointing out that they sell Exedy clutches for dirt cheap. I had a Delco clutch ordered, but when i opened the box and found out it was a China peice of crap, i sent it back to Rock Auto and ordered the Exedy one.
I will have more on my car as the month progresses. Keep checking back. And, for those curious i am doing something about the patchy paint on my car before Bfest hits next summer. It will be nice to have a solid color car again. I also have a surprise that will be revealed down the road, something for the interior, exterior and maybe somewhere else.
One last thing, while searching the yards this morning, i found something very interesting:

I'll just leave it at that

Geoff - GL with your car. You make me cringe when I see you storing such nice soft things as jack shafts, etc on the exterior painted body surface of the car. And then nice oily engine parts on the seats. It reminds me of the condition i received the quasar GTZ that Chad has now.
Don't make you resto work any harder than it has to be.

Re: My GTZ Returns!
Oh, all the parts inside the car are either brand new, or my headlights, neither of which have oil on them. The shifter plate is just dusty. The wheels im using as jack stands, actually dont fit the front wheels. Since i did the N-body brake upgrade im in need of some matching wheels all around. I would put the car on stands, but i just put the new struts in the front last summer and the car has been down since then roughly. I didnt want my new struts going bad so i flipped a set of tires i cant use upside down and am using the cars weight to keep the struts compressed.
All my engine parts are being stored on a nice free-wheeling 3-rack cart. No oily parts will be kept in the car. Also, everything else that in the car, isnt as dirty as it appears. Only dirty parts are the headlights and they are just dusty.
The paint is gonna be the hardest part as i dont have a paint booth, but am gonna do what i can for now just so she is one color for Bfest this year

My other N-body brake buddy!!!

IIRC its Me, You, Cliff, and then well Geoff has the Vette calipers but similar upgrade overall.
And it's currently just me and Barry with the Neon rear's but I know Woody's been planning that swap and a few others I've heard buying parts to do it as well.

Re: My GTZ Returns!
They are not the best thing in the world but I have to say they should have been the stock size that came on these cars.
They are a huge improvement over the stock brakes, but if you are into autox then I highly recommend going with the F-body setup, OR finding a 13" set from a j-body Baer upgrade.
I have a feeling under extreme use these could warp as our stock ones do, but in a regular driving application they are way unlikely to do that. They are fine for me since typically I do not have to stop in a hurry all the time, only if something has crap the bed... LOL

Re: My GTZ Returns!
Yeah John, these brakes do make one hell of an improvement over stock! I do have vented rear Daytona brakes that i am also installing before bfest. Im hoping witht he combined clamping force, the car will stop 100X better than it did with the stock brakes. I still agree with you on them, these should have been the front rotors the car came with, cept, only on the GTZ and Z26 models. The rest could have dealt with the smaller crappy brakes (i.e. base models and GT's).
I prolly will never upgrade to the Vette calipers and rotors for the simple fact of, i just dont need that much braking force on my car. When the rears go in, im gonna be lovin it! I just need to get the brackets machined up.

Re: My GTZ Returns!
Why on earth would you donwgrade all the way back to 92 brakes... I can understand using the F-body rotors and calipers on the GTP... But keep the knuckles on the Beretta and just get some Grand Am calipers and rotors. It's stupid to go all the way back to stock when they are just so pathetic. Especially if your going to take the time to do rear disc... Neon discs are LARGER than the 92 front rotors...MY91GT(Z) wrote:the car i got from stuntmanmike has n/f body brake upgrade too that will go on my gtp(at least the f body part) for me to downgrade to 92+ brakes and rear discs n puttin my intrax/kyb/addco set up on in the spring
I would agree with you here if the Z26's had more power and get up than a base model.. but even with the 3100v6 auto combo in a base those brakes were too small. They should all have the 11" fronts and the Z's and GTZ's should have had a rear disc option.90GTZHO wrote:I still agree with you on them, these should have been the front rotors the car came with, cept, only on the GTZ and Z26 models. By less than 1/4" IIRC. And the piston is much smaller than the stock front, so it's really not an issue. I don't want all that extra inertia of heavier brakes.3X00-Modified wrote:Why on earth would you donwgrade all the way back to 92 brakes... I'll take the 4.4 lbs (total) to stop better, as well as the lightened weight of the knuckle and caliper.woody90gtz wrote:By less than 1/4" IIRC. And the piston is much smaller than the stock front, so it's really not an issue. I don't want all that extra inertia of heavier brakes.

Re: My GTZ Returns!
There will soon be the option for using any stock C5/C6 setup on the n-body knuckles. This should be a substantial cost savings over anything that baer sells.3X00-Modified wrote:F-body setup, OR finding a 13" set from a j-body Baer upgrade.
