Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
I went to the junkyard and pick up a '92 GTZ cluster...will it work for my '96 base model? if so in mean time can some one tell me how to dissemble my cluster properly lol

you will need a z26 1996 cluster your car is obd2
Re: Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
Agreed. You would also need to change the sensor for the oil pressure.

so basically your saying that the GTZ cluster wouldnt work..and only the z26 will work?

Re: Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
Well, yes.
The wiring harness on your car is OBD II. The cluster from the GTZ is ODB I. So only ones from a 96 year would work, basically. 94 and 95 were OBD 1.5, which was a half breed between the two and also will not work properly.
Not saying there isn't a way to make them work though. But beyond my knowledge. But you do have to change the oil sensor, currently its a sending unit for an idiot light, not a pressure unit. You have to have the pressure unit for the gauge to work.

Naw, if you have a full cluster for a 96, its plug and play, and the oil sending unit is right in front on the motor just below the exhaust manifold, real easy to get to when i did the swap in my old 94 base.

aight cool..ill try to get it configured out when i have time..will notify you guys whenever im in trouble

Re: Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
so i did the 96 z26 cluster swap in to my 96 corsica and it was a plug and play but some the of lights aand gauges dont work
so is there anything that i need to do ??
i did a quad 4 swap but the engine and ecu are all OBD 1 everything else is OBD2

91-95 should swap, granted the engine from the donor car matches your car (6 cyl - 6 cyl, 4 cyl to 4 cyl). 96 -96 swap the same way but because they are set up for the OBDII harness, they will not plug and play to an older year.
For your oil pressure gauge to work, at least on the V6 cars, you need to swap to the longer of the two OPSUs (Oil Pressure Sending Unit) available for your car. I would suggest going with a factory (from a junkyard) replacement over Autozone, but you may have better luck with their electronics than me. I've not tried other auto parts stores for that part.
As for the 96 car with the quad four. I have no idea what to tell you, hah, sorry. My only guess to part of the problem is that your Tach is off because it was from a V6 car the cluster came from, and you're running the 4 cyl. Try a cluster from a 4 cyl car.
Also, for you OBDII swappers: Jon has a write up that used to be on bstuff (and maybe it is here too) that explained how to wire up the OBDII harness to work with the OBD 1.5 (94-95) dash harness, which allows you to retain your cluster when doing a swap. It may not be of much use to most of you, but if anyone wants it for reference, I can send it your way as I have it saved.
Edit: Take that back, it's right here: http://beretta.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4178
And please, if anyone notices some mis-information on my post, correct me so that I can fix it. I'm just basing this off of memory.

Re: Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
A 96 Z26 cluster is setup to read a V6 signal sent from the ECM (OBDII) for the tach signal. You changing the engine side harness to OBDI means your car is now OBDI. The only thing that is OBDII controlled for the most part is the engine, the interior harness is very much alike minus a few wires but is in the end controlled by whatever ECM you have in there. So you are OBDI as you sit and need to fix or re-wire some wires on the interior harness to make stuff work... As well as find an older OBDI Quad 4 or 4 cylinder full cluster since your tach will never read correctly even if you feed it with the proper signal, which on OBDI and OBDI.5 cars comes from the ICM and not the ECU.Fmondays wrote:so i did the 96 z26 cluster swap in to my 96 corsica and it was a plug and play but some the of lights aand gauges dont work

My writeup explains the difference between the two clusters and to be honest the only difference is the Tach signal source... One is picked up off the ICM and the other is direct from the ECU. There may be a Tach out pin on a 94-95 ECU that would run a 96 cluster but I'm not positive on that... But you can run a 91-95 cluster in a 96 car, you just need to find the Tach wire and stop it at the ICM and tap the correct output rather than it running all the way to the ECM connectors. My red car is OBDII and it has the 95 full cluster I put in and it worked fine.

Yay, I was hoping Jon would post here =). Thank you for the more technical explanation.

I don't know if anyone has actually tried it, but with regards to a '96, the 4-cylinder and V6 clusters may be the same. Since there is a specified tachometer output from the PCM, it may be sending a corrected signal and not just a pulse-per-fire like the old style.

Re: Will a GTZ cluster fit in a regular base model?
Interesting, I've never given it a second thought due to the implications of doing that on the previous years. Now I want to try! Of course that means I'd have to find a 96 4 cyl with the full cluster ..
If anyone has the means, that would be something interesting to clarify someday.
