No, muffler bearings Woody!

Just seems odd they would do that. They're a sealed bearing.

Sealed just means you don't have to and can't re-grease them, but there is a reason that the axle nut has to be torqued to 185-192 ftlbs.

Woody, no thats not chrome paint. What it was is Dupli-color High Heat Aluminum. It gave it that extremely high shine almost like chrome. To be honest, it was rather soar to the eyes. The paint im using now, makes everything look like it was just natural metal with a clear coat. Cept i didnt want to use clear cause it has a tendency to turn yellow over time.

Im also going to add a remote mount oil filter so that when i change the oil, i dont have to worry about oil running down the side of the engine and ruining my "pretty" block and oil pan.

Aight, so today i was trying to make some more progress, almost got to exactly where i wanted to be till something interrupted that, but i'll get into that in a few.

I got a bit of a late start, but i was waiting for Fedex to bring me my timing parts that i needed to finish the long block. They showed up around 10:30am and i finally made it to my dads about 12:15pm after i made a couple stops to pick up some carb clean, brake kleen, paint and primer. My intention was to finish the long block, rip out the under hood harness and get things ready to be repainted and cleaned up. I was able to get the harness out, as well as the rack and pinion and a bunch of other small stuff that would be in the way when i painted. I also got the heater box out so i can clean and paint around that as well.

It started to get cold and late so i went on to get the long block done. I was able to get the timing cover stripped of its former paint job, cleaned up real nice and repainted with the new color. It does look a lil brighter than the rest of the parts, but as the paint fully sets up it will continue to darken up. I also ran out of gloss black engine paint, so the cover i just cleaned up as best as i could for now and will repaint it before the motor goes in. I got about 99% of the long block done when i went to go install the last timing component, the tensioner. I pulled it out of the ziplock bag i had it stored in, touched it just right and the thing flew apart and the spring landed somewhere in the shop that me and my dad could not locate. So now, i have to buy a new tensioner Other than that, i have the motor all timed out, guides installed, gears torqued down and all set, all i got to do is get a new tensioner, bolt it in and the motor is done. Oh, and i forgot, i have to install a new crank seal in the timing cover but that takes less than 30 seconds to do.

That black stuff they used from the factory is a pain in the ass to work with, unless you have a 1500* heat gun like my dad does, then its a peice of cake The extra wires i have coming thru the firewall are for a fan override switch, and what used to be a radiator sprayer. You can also see some of the cable left behind from when i had the battery in the trunk.

Here is how the engine bay looked when i left for home tonight. As you can see, i wasnt messing around with how much i was removing in order to get the bay all cleaned up and repainted looking good.


The core support area is pretty yellowed. Most of the discoloration is under where the battery goes, surprise surprise.


I just need to degrease one more time and pressure wash the bay then i can start cleaning up, priming, and painting. Bad thing is, i removed the rack from the car so moving it outside will be fun.

And here is how the motor looks as of right now. Only a couple bolts in the cover to keep dirt out. I also have the motor wrapped up with a Gald Force FLex bag to keep addition dirt out.

If I had my motor out right now and the time that you do, I'd probably be cleaning and painting my engine bay too... But I just got my diff out last weekend to send to Jeff... I still have yet to start the teardown. Maybe I'll do that next year since by the time I have the motor out I'll only have time to fix the header cross over, the header bolt threads, and inspect the transmission for any wear.

I remember very well what a pain it was to remove that rock hard black sealant.

Aight, so today was all about the engine bay. While i may not have had the ability to remove every little thing like woody did (jerk....lol jk), i removed about as much as i could without getting too crazy. I spent and hour scrubbing the engine bay till it shined with greased lightning and a my dads power washer (i love that thing!) I forgot to take some pics after i cleaned the hell out of it (i was really determined to get this done today).

After washing it out, i sprayed the entire area out with brake cleaner, let it dry then pushed it back inside. After which, i proceeded to start wrapping everything up with news paper and masking tape. Took me about another 45mins to get everything protected and ready to go for paint. Once i had it all masked off, i hit the whole engine bay with adhesion promoter from Duplicolor and let that sit in for a few mins. After waiting a few, i started spraying the primer and getting everything in the engine bay painted up. Took a couple cans, but after the couple cans and a bit of a high later, i had the bay all primed up ready for paint.

Next, after letting the primer set in for about 30 mins, i took a brake and went cleaned a couple things up in the shop and installed the 92 water pipe on the motor. In case anyone is wondering, im converting my cooling system over to the 92-94 style with the sealed overflow/fill tank. Im tired of the lower hose rubbing on my frame and taking the paint off it.

Once i got that done, i went back to the car and went to town with the paint and kept going till i ran out. The end result really made me a happy camper. I dont think i have ever seen the engine bay look as good ever as it did after i got done painting everything Once the motor and trans go back in, i will have a very "new" looking engine bay with motor, i cant wait to see how it turns out. Im gonna be installing the motor and trans in from the bottom so i dont scratch up the engine bay when i put it in.

Heres some pics of the bay when i was heading out for the night. I have a couple areas to touch up, but i also need one more can of paint to do so, will take care of that sunday.

I wasnt too worried about the subframe getting any overspray as i need to repaint it anyways. I also wasnt worried about the brake and fuel lines getting painted either as its not gonna hurt anything. Overall, i like how it turned out, looks like a brand new engine bay I also wasnt worried about over spray on the fenders as i have another set im gonna be swapping on with a mod or two done to them.
