My W41 GTZ --Update 5/2 Shifter Pics
Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
There's more to a TB adapter than just making three holes. You need to make sure the piece is containing counter sunk holes for the surface mating of the manifold and adapter to attach. Then you will need to make the bolt pattern for the new TB. Additionally create the bracket mounting points for the quad cable and figure out the brake booster port (tap a hole in mani or make the adapter thicker for a port [thicker materials means more $ and more stress in making holes]) . Lastly, you will need to have the adapter surfaces checked to assure it's true .
Rather buy it if its cost effective!

Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
Already one step ahead of the game
i have all the bases covered already, i just need the plate to make an adapter. I have counter sinking drill bits, hole saws, and anything else i could think of. I also have a friend with a mill incase they need to be flattened
Also, my intake has a spare pipe plug port in the back of it thats perfect for a brake booster line

Yeah I have one of each I guess, and the Subaru sound is very distinct as well so that may overpower the jet engine noise.... But at the same time I would love to SC the pink car... I think the addition of a screaming baby sound coming at you would be awesome! LOL90GTZHO wrote:Jon, i had, for a short time, that 91 Saab 9000 Turbo that had an intake on it, and the BOV was pretty loud on it. I loved how it sounded, but to be totally honest with you, and your gonna look at this weird, but i really love the sound the intake pulses make thru an open cone filterAnd when you turbo a car, you take the sound away from it. And dont get me wrong, a car that sounds like it has a jet engine in it sounds cool, but you dont get that angry, aggressive sound from the motor till after it flies by. I love it sounding that way when its coming at you and as it goes by

You should find a sound clip of Pat's car... IIRC that still had quite the agressive sound, and you can take a BOV and do 100% recirc so you don't hear it as much. The VTA setup is more of a personal preference and not really necessary. I put a 50/50 on my Legacy because I like to sneeze after every shift, but I don't want to piss the car off to much since the air it vents has been measured by the MAF so every once and while you will get a rich condition/backfire from the exhaust. I know that doesn't solve the jet engine sound though

Corrected spelling above too

Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
Sorry man i thought your name was spelled with an "H".
Yeah i have the clip actually of when Rex still owned it. And while you can still hear the engine, the turbo covers up the intake pulses you usually hear thru a cone filter that sounds like rapid beating of something on the wall inside the filter. I just like that sound
Doing more work on the car today, gonna try and get the motor and trans hung inside the engine bay

Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
Naw, im cheating this time. Im not taping anything up, im putting it all in from the bottom, not takin any chances on messing anything up.
Today i was able to get a couple things done before i was called into work to have to help do a water extraction from someones roof caving in.
I was able to install the blower housing, steering rack and reinstall the steering column. I did a temporary hook up of the tie rods to the rack and checked how the steering felt. I was honestly surprised! It turns really smooth, minimal effort and rather quite. I think i will be happy with my decision of the manual conversion.
I was also able to get the transmission cleaned up to look almost brand new! Greased Lightning is by far the best stuff for removing baked on grease and dirt. Of course, hooking my dads power washer to hot water was helpful as well
The good news is, next time i go out the temps should be up i can get the trans painted, and the flywheel and clutch assembly all put together and get things ready to be installed
Heres some pics from the day.
Heres the trans after i cleaned it up for the time being. I still have some more cleaning to do on it, then paint is to match the aluminum on the motor. Looks so much better than it did when i started

Inside on the dolly for the night

And another of the engine bay with the rack installed, blower housing and clutch master. The tie rods are coming out this weekend and getting painted black like the rack, same with the subframe when the motor goes it.

This was all i was able to achieve for the day. Cleaning the trans took up most of the time i was at my dads. Im hoping it will be fully ready to go by the end of saturday night, and hopefully lift the motor/trans into the bay sunday.
More as i move forward

Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
It might have, but i found that hitting it with a couple cans of carb cleaner seemed to help too. This time around i was scrubbing and scraping to get that stuff off there as much as i could. As soon as i hit it with the carb clean and it soaked in, i sprayed it with the greased lighting and the dirt just flew off when the power washer hit it. Last time, it hardly did anything to it.
I was hoping to do more work on her tomorrow, but, people pipes always break at the end of the week and we have to clean it all up. My boss said everyone will be off for sunday for sure, so while everyone is watching the SB, i will be working on my car full steam!

Hence the reason i really dont want to turbo her now
There is nothing like the sound of a Quad screaming when you shift redline! Wait till you hear it in person, that was with the intake behind the left headlight, now its underneath the drivers hood vent and its loud as hell!

Yes, I must agree, with all my Quads, the Quasar being NO exception, there's nothing quite like that almost turbo PSHHH sound in between "haulin' ass" shifts once an open cone WAI or CAI is installed. So close to a BOV sound, it makes people do a double take. Love it!
Car is looking fantastic Geoff. You da man, keep up the great work!

Re: My GTZ Returns--Cleaned Up and Pretty!
So, today WAS supposed to be the day that i get the motor/trans into my engine bay so i can start the harness re-looming. Well, that was almost the case.
It started off with me cleaning the tie rods up, getting them painted, then searching for the aluminum engine bracket for the rear motor mount and getting it cleaned up and painted, then to removing the subframe and getting the engine bay ready for occasion. I was able to change the shift cables before i got too far along. The ones i had in there were okay, but the actual shifter cable was so freakin tight, that it was extremely hard to shift front to back. So i changed those out with better ones in better condition.
I got all the way to the frame being pulled, cleaned up and painted, and had the motor off the stand to install the flywheel and the clutch and then the trans. When i went to install the flywheel, i found out something that just killed my night....the holes drilled for the crankshaft were drilled in too small of a bolt pattern! I was not happy! So, now im gonna have the flywheel from the spare motor cleaned up and resurfaced and use that since its never been cut. Rock Auto gets to get another email from me about a wrong part.
Among other things i did, i got the jackshaft, the shifter linkages on the trans, and tie rods cleaned and painted black. The rear motor mount bracket cleaned and painted that nice natural aluminum color and did the shift cables. I also got the driver side drain flap for the firewall drain cleaned up and reinstalled as well as the accessory bracket and tensioner mounted. I had to strip down and repaint the tensioner too cause it was a bright red. Once mounted, it looked alot better than it did the first time. With this current setback, im even more anxious to get this thing installed in the car, but theres always gotta be something. Anyways, heres the couple pics i took today.
Motor with accessory bracket installed, looks alot more natural now

Trans all cleaned up with the jackshaft stickin out of it on the cart with the subframe all painted up again

And the engine bay with the frame out and a couple things bolted back in (brake master cylinder, evap ling from tank, brake lines reattached)

As soon as i can get the flywheel cleaned up and another day off, i will be back full speed on this again.
