Coolant and oil mixing is a guaranteed head or head gasket failure. Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news. T-stat will absolutely NOT cause a oil/coolant mix. No way in hell.
Love the GTZ. Looks exactly like the '90 GTZ Garnett I used to own some years back. Love that car.

man.. I don't even know if the $1000 I have is enough for a head gasket job... God I feel kinda screwed and I'm too scared to attempt it by myself... What should I do?

Looks to be in nice shape. Take your time and a head gasket replacement shouldn't be too bad.

I never said I'd sell, searched a very long time for this car, and know how rare it is... it's the best looking beretta I have owned and it's sentimental.. My fiance and her mother helped me find/get this car.. they went through a lot with me to get the guy to sell to me... so nah, I am not planning on selling this, it will be fixed and driven until I get a daily driver then garaged during bad weather... maybe in the future I'll find another retta to drive daily..
I do have a guy who is going to look at it, connections if you will, to a better deal at a garage than most people.. I plan on fixing it one way or another.. I'm not in a rush, but I don't wanna drive it with the knowledge that it's gasket is bad, I will definitely damage the engine at some point and then I'm screwed.. I have been fortunate enough to not have driven it much at all since the "pop" of my head gasket..
Regardless, not having my own vehicle to drive can be complicated at times, but again props to my fiance for letting em use her car, and for driving me when my license was screwed up.
This is her w/the GTZ last summer:
