drive axle
drive axle
My car is a 88. originally a 2.0 L auto.
I have had a 3.1 5 speed in it since shortly after buying it, used axles from the donor car 91 cavy, kept my spinals, kept my struts but put the springs from the v6 car on my struts.
So.. my passenger side axle im pretty sure is going, it vibrates like crazy and clicks from time to time, i suspect part of it is possibly the wheel bearing as well, i may switch that up today with 1 i kept from the donor car.
Ok so heres my question ..... will the axle from the 2.0 L auto work on my 3.1 5 speed. and if not whats the difference. the length should be close to the same i would assume, but maybe different where it connects to the jack shaft ?
I assume, the outer ends is what wears on the axles the piece inside is probably ok but wore the ends where it goes into, so i prob couldnt pop my bad axle apart and put the guts from the 2.0 L auto axles onto the broken one so it will hook to the jack shaft.
I think its the inner side thats going, because the boot is ripped a little and grease comes out, i knew this when i started driving it but planned on replacing the axles this winter. that never happened, and i dont have alot of cash to go buy a new axle right now so would like to make something work.
Its still driving now over 15,000 KM on it, didnt start making noises and stuff till the last 5 K. i really dont know how it still going, i have had other vehicles and once they start clicking you can kiss it good by. i have put some grease into it a couple of times with a needle tool on the end of the grease gun, but it eventually comes back out.

Re: drive axle
Ok so just incase anyone wants to know....
A 2.0 L automatic passenger (right side) drive axle will fit on a v6 5 speed.
Exact same length and same where it goes onto the jack shaft ( my shaft is not enlosed in a casing like i seen one on here from a quad 5 speed its just a solid shaft that runs across.
No more vibration now. YEAH. i didnt think it would fit or would have put it in long time ago lol.

Re: drive axle
well a couple weeks ago i put in the passenger side (right) axle from the original engine and trans in my car, it was smooth and no noises.
Well last night all of a sudden its clunking, not clicking or vibrating but when i let off or accelerate its clunking bad not sure if its the right or left side its hard to tell because it sounds like its coming from both sides.
Im going to measure the left side and see if its the same as the 2.0 L automatic axle. and im pulling out my trans mount and filling it with urethane today and i have a brand new right side lower front mount going to fill that too and put it in, maybe the engine is sitting low on the left side, i have replaced the top trans mount just after i started driving the car as it had a noise from an axle then, and it went away when i put the other used trans mount in, but soon as there is weight and pressure on that mount it squishes down so hopefully filling them will help.
Not looking forward to it though its -12C today and my shop is an hour drive and i cant go there today my sons home sick from school throwing up all over FUN times lol.

Well the passenger side was the same, since it has the jack shaft that runs across it connects to that the same. but the driver side is probably different where it goes into the transmission.scd88ga wrote:Dude, just go on any auto parts website and compare part numbers...
The pass side went because the boot was ripped and i knew that but planned on buying new ones this winter, that never happened yet so im trying to make do with what i already have.
Ill get them to look it up at the store when i go to get some urethane
Re: drive axle
Passenger side is the same... driver side is different and they also list 2 of them for the driver side. 119 plus tax. 35 i think core charge i get back. so around 100 after tax and stuff. 1 year warranty told them ill need that lol
............ passenger side front engine mount i think is a little bit screwed lol, the center part isnt even attached, filled my new one with urethane and pulled the top trans mount off to fill it. hopefully that stops the clunking on the axle and last a little longer

Re: drive axle
still clunks but not as bad, going to baby it until i can buy new axles, theres another parts store im going to get prices from. they are cheap but i dont know the quality and warranty on their parts. i priced strut mounts for my gf's lumina there and they were 12 bucks, and 35 anywhere else.
Driver side axle i priced today at car quest was 119 + tax and minus 34 for core charge, 1 year warranty so thats not bad, going to price the passenger side too and just put both new ones in.
Put in a front passenger side front engine mount today that i got on ebay a while ago for 10 bucks, lists at the parts store here for 85. before putting new axles in ill get a passenger side rear mount too i imagine its not very good either.

Re: drive axle
well i ordered new axles today, i sure hope they are the right ones, for a 1988 beretta 2.8 L 5 speed they are a different part number to a 1991 cavy 3.1 5 speed.
Ordered the ones for the cavy because thats whats in my car now with that motor and trans, not sure why they would be a different part number because they fit. and you can get the left side with or without intermediate shaft.
60-1114 cv - left without intermediate shaft $94.00 CAD + $15.00 Core charge
60-1125 cv - right with intermediate shaft. $ 75.25 CAD + $45.00 core charge
The more expensive one has a less core charge. when i called they told me on the phone the left side was $68.00
I priced the left side yesterday at car quest it was $119 plus the core. these new prices are from a store called HOT SPOTS
I just hope they are the right ones

Re: drive axle
looking on some sites online they use different numbers but the last 4 digits match what i ordered... oh crap..
A1601125 # 6Cyl 3.1L;
Fit Note: Automatic Transmission, With Soft And Firm Ride Handling Suspension.
Location: Front Driver Side
Same part number on the site.. list for a 2.2 L Location: Front Passenger Side
and the 1125 one i ordered is supposed to be for a standard.
A1601114 6Cyl 3.1L
Fit Note: Standard Transmission.
Location: Front Driver Side
This one looks to be correct. but the other one is for a auto not standard.
EDIT. ok so maybe its the right because for a 1991 cavy 3.1 5 speed it list the same part 1125 as standard trany.

Re: drive axle
Anybody on here could easily find those part number themselves by doing a 1 minute search on about 100 different websites or making a simple phone call...
Going by the part numbers, those appear to be an A1 Cardone Reman axles, and you paid too much.

Re: drive axle
they are reman's and the other store wanted $119.00 for the left side so $95 isnt bad
The last axle i bought was for a 91 mazda mz6 and it was like $250. so these are cheap compared to that.
