axle seal around the jackshaft

Post by themixer »

Anyone replaced one of these before? I am looking at the factory service manual and it says you need special tools? My trans is pissing oil out of it quite badly. Looking at rockauto they show 3 ones for my 1991 5 speed can anyone shed light on which one I am going to need and how difficult or tips on installing one?

Which jackshaft do you have? Is the axle seal on the tranny or at the end of the jackshaft? Either way its the same seal, you dont need any special tools to remove it, just pry it out even if you have to destroy it. You may wanna remove some fluid from your tranny first so it doesn't leak all over though. When installing, you will need a socket (or something of the like) that is precisely the same size as the outer flat lip of the seal. You will also need a mini sledge hammer. If you don't have these things you will never get the seal in. You may also need to remove some of the sealant that was applied to the new seal.

its on the jackshaft side of the tranny, oil is coming out when the jackshaft meets the tranny, I have a 1991 Getrag 282. The leak has done a good job of removing the fluids. this doesnt sound too bad, what is the other seal that i need on the jackshaft? I didnt have a seal on the end of my jackshaft.

You don't need any other seal. Don't let the fluid level get too low if your still driving the car around.

I have it parked now after noticing the drop in fluid, nothing worse than an oil leak

Removal is easy. Just pry it out. Be careful not to gouge or scratch the surface. Like 3400beretta said you will not get it installed with out the proper tool. You need either a big socket that is the exact size or a seal driving kit. I picked up the kit for mine from harbor freight for like $20 it made it real easy.

I've never used any "special tools" I've always used a scrap piece of exhaust pipe. works like a charm.

You guys get the seal from a local parts place? Mine isn't leaking but I can see a little tear in it so I might as well replace it while it's apart.
