GTU shuts Down
GTU shuts Down
I have a 1989 Beretta GTU with the 2.8 and it starts good but if I want to rev the car it shuts down. It can stay on for a long time but as soon as I rev the car it shuts off. As soon as it shuts down I can turn it on right away. Any recommendations of things to check.

In my case when that happened, I had to replace the ECM.. I could tap on it and then get it to rev once again.

I have a new one that I tried and still did not work. Could it be the chip that you can remove from the ecm? I replaced the ECM and it did the same thing.

Re: GTU shuts Down
I would start disconnecting the sensors one at a time to see if anything is the problem there.

TPS is the Throttle Position Sensor. It's right on your throttle body. It'll be the only sensor there.felix92GTZ26 wrote:Where is the TPS located?

Re: GTU shuts Down
That is NOT the TPS. That's the IAC (idle air control) valve. The TPS will be the OTHER sensor with a round plug going to it and it will be a "flat" sensor on the side of the TB.
Re: GTU shuts Down
Well I changed the TPS and IAC. It still does the same thing.

Felix,
A car needs three things: Fuel, air, and spark. From your video, I do not see any check engine lights, so I assume that there are no codes. Rather than revving (press gas pedal and release), have you tried holding a faster, steady idle at say, 2000? Then, if that holds, 3000? 3500? 4000? Can you maintain the steady, higher RPM's for 30 seconds, 60 seconds, indefinite? If you can hold a constant steady idle at these RPM's, I think that we can say that we have enough fuel being supplied to the injectors. Same goes for the ignition system -- it's supplying a consistent and reliable spark. And nothing blocking air going in or exhaust going out. Try that test and report back.

Ah sh!t! damn it mike, you got me on that one. That's what happens when I don't have a Beretta for over a year. I forget sh!t.
Thanks for the correction dude.

just did a test and at 2500RPM it can hold 30 sec. if i go to 3000RPM it still holds. as soon as i hit 3300RPM it shuts down. then after it stinks like gas.

Re: GTU shuts Down
weird, i have a 3.1 basically the same engine, never had a problem with it not running. has it been running fine before ? maybe. ummm. check wires to the coil packs and spark plug wires maybe, maybe the coils are shutting down... it starts up easy though so this is weird.
Im guessing if it stinks like gas after its not a fuel problem unless its leaking somewhere, seems like its loosing spark or ecm is being dumb and just shutting off. just the connectors at the ecm make sure they are not corroded. wiggled wires around maybe there is a short somewhere to the ecm. could be anything i guess.
I dont know
Was looking at your pics on there too, your interior is identical to mine i have the same seats with the stripes, same door panels, and my drivers panel is coming off at the top as well, pass side is mint though. and my dash had the same problem but was cracked out more and is not fiberglass and bondo.

Re: GTU shuts Down
I think that we can say with some certainty that it is not the fuel pump. From your video, one thing I noticed is that when you start the car, I do not hear the same robust and throaty exhaust note that I get on my 89 GT. I am wondering if you have an exhaust restriction in either the catalytic converter or the muffler (or both).
I am also assuming that you have a clean air filter element on the front end (just wanted to make sure).
If you have the mechanical ability to do so, get the car up on ramps, then get underneath, spray some penetrating fluid on the two nut/bolts, and disconnect the downpipe at the rear of the engine. Repeat your 2500 RPM idle test (yes, it will be very loud), and see if it makes a difference.
I am suggesting this route, as opposed to one chasing an intermittent electrical problem (ignition control module and coils included), mainly due to you reporting the symptom of the gasoline stench when the engine dies. GL.
EDIT: After posting the above, I went back and watched your # 1 video (taken from behind the car). Given the clarity in which the camera mic can pick up your interior chime, the exhaust intensity when you start the car is not what I would expect.
