Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
Switching heads and cams to a Jasper motor is a waste of time and money. Your better off finding a used LGO motor and putting that in and rebuilding your motor with used W41 parts and head you desire. You will unlikely find W41 cams. I found several on Car-part.com. 086 heads are usually cracked...many are minor and can be repaired..and you can install Helicoils in the cam towers. Helicoil in the cam bolt holes will keep your cam from dancing. Another problem you could have had was a low oil pressure to top end from a bad or missing check valve.
Several other parts you need to look at on your 1994.
Upgrade exhaust manifold and down pipe to a 89-92 LGO. A LGO crank pulley from an earlier model.
Save the existing bottom end from your 1994 LGO and use it with W41 bottom end. You can freshen up a LGO bottom and check for problems.
The BEST place to find a new LGO motor would have been from Mantapart of from that guy who passed away in Florida. That option is now out.
If you do go with Jasper i would be VERY interested in a Dyno sheet after your done.
I am kind of a freak when i take things apart, and rebuilding my toys i typically buy new oem mounts, check my injectors, clean everything. My shop does this.....will your Mechanic? Doubtful.

As far as the price going up if you don't have them do the install, no. In truth, if you bought directly from Jasper, you'd probably get a better deal. All shops mark parts UP, not down. So while you're paying $2800 for an engine, they are likely getting it for $2k.
Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
I thought Jasper only sold to shops to certify their warranty.

I'm fairly certain of that as well, which is why I said IF he could get one from Jasper directly. Maybe he could find a shop willing to sell him the motor alone.

Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
The owner of the shop didnt call me back until i was at work so this is the first chance i have had to get on here..
Issue 1.
If i decide to just buy the motor so i can pay kurt to swap it, i will still be at the 4700 because i still owe for them tearing down the old motor... so im screwed there...
Issue 2.
If i do let them do that, the total would be in the 4750 range and i dont even know if that includes tax or not.
Issue 3.
They Jasper is already building the motor so i cant back out. Yet i havent paid a dime on the engine and i even asked when we first started talking about it if he wanted me to pay ahead of time.
Fact 4. I owe just a shade less than 6,000 on the Cobalt..
I have had the Beretta home in the garage since Oct. 2009, and Im SICK of waiting to drive it. Im TIRED of seeing it just sit in the garage. That being said, you have no idea how bad i just want let them get it done..
But the better side of me kicked in tonight. Tomorrow im going to the shop and telling them my hours got cut and there is no way i can pay to have this done now. I will pay what i owe them for tearing down the motor and be done with that.
Then the Beretta will sit in the garage until the Cobalt is paid off. I will buy the 086 head, W41 cams and towers off of Jamie at Bfest and decide what to do from there.
*** Erich, you are right. The holes were stripped. That was a pain in the ass with the whole flywheel thing and i bet thats what did all the damage.
I feel like crap for this whole situation. The wrong side of me took control just because of how bad i wanted to get it done by Bfest, but i dont think i should risk my financial stability over it either.
I dont know what the right thing to do is. I know im going to piss the owner of the shop off. I dont know

They're charging you $2k just for tearing the friggin' motor down? I'd be PISSED!! All they did was tear the top end off FFS! If I tried robbing people like that, I'd be out of business FAST! And they're full of crap on the motor "already being built, so you can't back out now". Wrong. You haven't paid for it. That makes it THEIR problem, not yours. Do NOT let them rip you off. I own and run an automotive repair shop and I'm telling you, they're trying to f**k you over.

Man, I'm with SGR - $2 grand to do what? Is the old engine out of the car and 100% disassembled? Even all of that work is not worth 2 grand. As for Jasper, the engine is there hanging out on a shelf more than likely. Call Jasper up directly, and tell them the entire story - name of the shop and what they're trying to pin on you - because the shop is making it sound like Jasper is dicking you around - and I highly doubt that's the case. Jasper won't want their name drug through the mud.
The shop is fucking you here, and from the ridiculous prices they quoted you before all of this - I'd say they've been planning on it. So how are you gonna meet em, with lipstick on or a lead pipe?

Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
Update... I got the engine cancelled..
The guy changed the story on the cams... im getting a bit irritated lol
The way he explained it to me before the guy told me the cams were bad all blah blah..
But.. After telling him that i just cant do the 5k and sorry, he then asked if i wanted him to go with the original plan of doing the headgasket, timing chain and fixing the cam tower oil leak.. Because now he said the only reason he suggested a new motor was because he didnt know how long my motor i have now would last with the current cams thats in it.
I told them to wait. Im talking to Jamie on monday about getting the 086 head, W41 cams and towers.
The question i have is, should i put new cam towers, cams and head on my current motor thats in the car?
Heres why i ask.. and i never realised this until Erich brought it up... The threads for the bolts that hold on the flywheel 3 of the 6 werent the greatest and i had to run a tap through them. All of them tightened up except for 1 bolt that i got slightly tight but felt like it was going to spin the thread.
Should i look into a different motor or go ahead and put the good cams and such in this one?

Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
Hmm... being that it's on the crank I don't know if heli-coiling it would be the best idea. A machine shop could tell you for sure. The idea of having an issue with those bolts though would be enough to make me call up a machine shop and ask them about it.
Have him show you the cams and show the pitting. I've seen some pretty high mileage cams come out looking pretty good. Unless you chewed bearings up and sent it through the oil system - I'm betting your cams look good enough to use.

i always thought my 3100 cam looked pretty chewed up but the car always ran fine. These pics were taken at like 80k miles. the engine ran fine till 176k.

Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
You've already got it apart, do the W41 swap. Get the head checked first at a REPUTABLE machine shop. Oh, and have someone ELSE do the work. Kurt, another shop, whatever. You're getting royally fucked at the shop you're using now bro. Honestly.
Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
although I most likely will not return to my former mechanic because of some minor issues that I have deemed annoying to the point of me not doing business anymore, I did manage to get my engine (quad 4 h/o) gaskets replaced and the block planed to remove my damage/cracks.. I had other expensive components and such replaced and it was all done for $1100.00 USD. I can't see why so much money just for an engine would be worth it?

Re: Anybody have a Jasper motor? or ever bought one?
Yeah i know. The wantingness to drive the car soo bad kind of took over lol. He explained the cam situation as being terrible yet after i say i cant pay the 5k for a motor he says it fine.. bleh.. whatever
Anyways... Little update..
Im going to talk to Jamie monday about getting the head and w41 parts. If we can work something out im hoping i can pay kurt to show me how to put it together.
Im bringing the car home either monday or tuesday.. and as soon as i do i will post pics of the cams and towers that are "bad". When i looked at the cams in the shop, everything looks smooth on them.. It was the towers that had all the scratches and pitting but it wasnt all that deep i dont think. I will let you guys be the judge as soon as i post pics lol
