Jon... The redneck way would be running a ratchet strap underneath the trans and hooking it on to the end of the bracket...

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Ok I just finished the bracket. I picked up some angle iron at Ace and made it work. I boxed the angle where I could, welded the piss out of all the joints and added a 3/8 solid steel rod underneath the angle running from the engine to trans case for even more rigidity. It's ugly, but should be functional. The upper & lower bracket are now one piece, which won't be as convenient as stock, but I can work with it.

I don't think that will help against the flex that probably broke the one bolt already.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Let me tell you, that bracket is VERY strong now. I think it will work well. Remember, there is a solid 3/8 steel rod under the angle iron, and I filled it in with weld. I'll get a pic from the bottom side. Like I said, I knew it would be ugly...but in the bay it will be mostly hidden by the header tubes anyway.
I thought about adding a small piece to tie in to the 3rd bh bolt, but it really isn't necessary. That engine side is the strongest side of the bracket. I'd need to pick up some wider bar stock to have a piece big enough for the 18mm bolt to go through. It will be overkill, but I might as well do it.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
This is my intepretation of whats trying to happen... the line in the middle is where I'm saying that bracket is trying to fold in half and why they had the bracket continue to the block bolts, its not really "holding it up" its preventing the other bolted bracket from trying to flex toward the motor due to the main bracket being only one center bolt, a perfect pivot point... If it were two bolts at the frame mount I think this would have never been an issue since it wouldn't try to sag and flex as much. The fact that there is a big part missing between the original bracket and the top hole is why that bracket is flexing so much and caused one of the other bolts to crack the case. What you did may help but I'm not sure if its the fix all.

I see what you're saying John, but that fold now now has 3/4 angle welded to 3/8 rod with it. It's rugged as crap. And the two brackets are welded together, adding further rigidity.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
Technically no, because you welded to the bottom of that bracket so there is still nothing on the top of it preventing it from trying to flex toward the motor... The part there will try to help it from pivoting, but the point it's working from just isn't direct enough. Unfortunately with the clearance of the header the part needed just wont fit. Hopefully what you have will fix the issue but we'll see.
After this 92+ mount upgrade should be in mind.

Re: Project 91 "SS" 3400/5spd
That front lower bracket bolt is supporting weight again now, that's of the most importance the way I see it. Spreading the load between two bolts rather than one is the key. The load is being supported from the bottom of the bracket now, not the top...but I don't see that as being less effective.

Ok, but I'm telling you it's not the supporting of the weight thats your problem.

I don't see how you figure that, but I guess we'll see. I'm not worried about it.
