1990 Beretta idle??

Post by indyyellow »

Drivjng the car I am seeing it idle around 1k when I come to a stop. Once stopped it is then dropping to about I'd say 600-700 rpm. Is that about how these cars act when driven and are warmed up.
Also, at hwy speed, 55 mph I am seeing rpms at about 2500 I think I recall now that I am at the pc. Is that right?

Sounds like the IAC valve is hanging up a bit keeping the rpm elevated for a sec - 6-700 rpm sounds about right.

Let me restate this, I was giving you idles while in drive. It is hanging around at 1k at a stop in gear (air off, doesnt work anyway). If I am in park it is going up to about 1300. That is too much I think. Isn't the IAC in or around the MAF/TB? I am wondering if all that needs taken apart and given a good cleaning.
Any gaskets I need to worry about if I am taking that stuff apart?

Yes 1300 is high. Start by cleaning your IAC port, it's on the TB and is round. The other thing on there is the TPS and that can make a high idle when it goes out. Most of the time for me it was up around 2200rpm when it was bad(out of gear). Be sure to check your wires to the TPS. The TPS is easy to find as it is connected to the throttle shaft.
On the IAC there is a rubber O-ring. You just need to oil on it after it is wiped off with a paper towel.
My 90GT didn't have a MAF. Older cars and the 96 have them.

Still waiting for you to have the idle go up and down(also stall from time to time). If you do I have the part that will fix it. I've been waiting for another 90 3.1 to show up here for years.
By the way if you are not going to by a CAI or WAI for a long time I have a K&N air filter for the stock air box. The CAI or WAI is the way to go though, the stock system is not good for air flow.

Oh and don't touch the throttle stop. Changing that will hurt you in the long run.

throttle stop? I don't have a up and down idle. Just stays a little high. No telling how long this car sat around. It snagged it off one of those shady hood lots where they sell them cheap and in lousy shape. I knew what to be looking out for. The body is clean, 99% rust free, no wrecks, and runs well. Have had it out on the hwy many times, sat in the garage for a few days at a time and no leaks on the floor and when it is running at temp no smoking or burning smells. So I think I got lucky for 900 bucks + tax, etc.
Hell it's the boys car, neat looking and the ONLY one in town.
This weekend it is to get nice FINALLY. I will get into the TB stuff and see if a nice and easy clean up will slow down the idle.

Sorry Tim, there have been a few that have had idle problems and adjusted the throttle stop. It was not to put you down.
Beretta's work well with young drivers, almost too well and many times end in a crash. Forgive me...I want as many on the road as can be.

Glad to hear it!
They are starting to become rare. There are some ultra rare Beretta's out there, but the Indy tells people that don't know of the car that they were something more than just another car. It was a Indy 500 pace car once. It's real funny to see how people react when I tell them that. It tends to shut them up and make them stop laughing.

I barely recall them being pace cars. Maybe some day they will be worth a little coin if only cause they are rare, diff, not the usual HOT ROD, etc.

Could be, but they are not the same as the real pace car. But every year there are less and less of them. By the way that's why I like them, although they are far from a hot rod.

What did happen to the 3 Convert pace cars. Those are the only OFFICIAL ones right?

I don't know, I think that one was sold when GM was in trouble. If you get a chance look for some photos of the engine. The upper intake is the same as the 3500 V6 that came much later.

Does your son's have the Indy 500 stickers on it? It is about time for some photo's of this car Tim.
