Speakers: Can I do this...?
I have the 1990 Beretta...
The front speakers says 10 ohms, and they rotted and they are shot...
Would I be able to stick 8 ohm speakers as replacements...?
(The thing is: I have 8 ohm 4" speakers already...rofl)
This is the 2 front speakers in the top of the dash...
I just do not want to burn out the stock head unit because I cant get another one and replace it in time...
Plus I like listening to my casettes...lol
I do know with the car missing 2 ohms, there is an increase in power to the speaker and from the head unit...
and can be bad... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read you can go higher ohms in speakers but not lower...?
Basically, I was hoping the head unit is made for 8 ohms in front and the stock speaker was just 2 ohms more...
Thankz for the help

Re: Speakers: Can I do this...?
8 Ohm will work fine. Just at higher volumes, take care to not turn them up too high, especially on 50W RMS (not peak) or lower ratings. If they are higher than 50W RMS speakers, they actually may not get as loud as the stock, as they require more power. Won't hurt the radio, but you may suffer some volume loss. The radio is preset to keep the stock speakers below certain levels to prevent damage to them, but that feature may not work correctly on non-stock speakers, so your volume and audio tone may suffer a bit.
You are correct in the thinking on 8 ohms vs 10 ohms being more of a draw, however that particular difference should not hurt a factory radio in most cases. Now going with 4 ohm or something would be an issue. But if they are like 200W speakers or something, that could affect how loud they will go, as typically the stock radios put out roughly 100W total power /4, which gives you around 25 W RMS per channel. You want the speakers to be a bit higher (hence a 50W RMS) to cover handling the peak volume points, but you don't want to hook up say a 400W speaker to a 25W RMS system. It will not sound right, or be of the correct volume.
Mine are all still stock at this point in time, the only thing I did was drop in a rear dual channel (4 ohm per channel) 12" non-ported sub, that I am actually running paired which gives me 2 ohms, hooked up as bridged single channel on a 200W amp. It does ok. I need to upgrade the amp sometime in the future though, as I am running a 600W speaker. It actually over draws the amp a bit at 2 ohms. lol A 400W single channel would do better.
But I also changed out the head unit, using connector converters so that I can revert to stock in less than a half hour if I had to. Current head unit is a 200W /4, so its pushing the stock speakers roughly twice as hard as the OEM head unit did. But I dialed back the low frequencies on the speaker feeds using the head unit's built in EQ, and supplemented them with the rear sub instead. Works for this setup anyway.
Good luck!

Re: Speakers: Can I do this...?
Thanks for response, it helped.
But me beige the smart one, the little 4 infuses I had were in the wrong box, they were 4 ohm speakers...
And the speakers are 35 watt rms and like 100 peak or so...
I stuck them in anyways... Cuz I just gave up...
I'll get a better head unit later I guess, or better speakers, or both...
Works like a charm though, been running string the past 5 hours all maxes out...
Nothings overheating... I guess it's ok...
I only really need it to work for this weekend and ATM, I can't really buy anything...
I already spent my 350 on 2 12" woofers and an amp & box...
I skipped adding a low freq filter out to the little speakers, they sound beter without it
