how to remove dew strips

Post by themixer »

I bought new dew strips for my car, wondering how you take them off and on without damaging your door. Does anyone have any pics etc?

I used a Philips bit locked in vice grips to get to the screws from the inside of the window channel. It's not a really fun job... A 1/4" ratchet wrench to turn the Philips bit would be even better.

Dont forget to swear multiple times and make sure there is a nice cold beer close by. I hate dew strips, which is why the set I have thats good is not on the car yet... LOL

Can't pulling the door panel make it a simple job?

Nope, unless the door panel removed and the window all the way up allows access to those screws, but I doubt it. The screws are between the outer window glass and the outer door skin below the gasket that hits the window, even rolled all the way down, its a pain in the ass. You have to have a very narrow tool with a screwdriver bit basically. You can wedge the door body out a bit, if you have some tapered wood triangles as that would help you, but its still a pain to remove and replace. And easy to drop the screw into the door. lol

Good luck.

Inner frame of the door blocks getting to the screws straight on... They made this a bitch to do.

To answer the first part, yeah its going to be far easier and cheaper to find a good set of used ones. There are a few places that might have them new, but very pricey.

As to the difficulty level, who knows. Why do a lot of car manufacturers make things more difficult than they need to do? Mostly cause its easier and cheaper for them. Technically, if the glass is removed, you can get to them a hell of a lot easier, but not with a standard tool, still has to be a 90 degree or special, but at least with the glass out of the way you have more room.

The dew strips are still (to my knowledge) available from GM. Here are the part numbers straight off of RD's site.

The exterior part #'s are 20606220 and 20606221
The interior part #'s are 20320535 and 20320534

$25 a strip, so about $100 for all 4 new on a Burrito.
