wierd noise while shifting

Post by carter442 »

ok so i have a 95 beretta with a 3100 and lately i have noticed when i shift it makes a noise that i can honestly only describe as sounding like a pumps starving for fluid. i checked and the transmission fluid is fine maybe a bit overfull but thats it. im not sure where else to look. has anyone had this problem?

Might have a blockage in the valve body. When was the last time the fluid was drained and the filter changed?

Well, not sure what else to suggest. If you never have, maybe you should change the oil and filter. Typically they should be changed AT LEAST every 50k miles (75k kilometers) or sooner. Many people change the fluid/filter in them at 25-35k. Its a pain to change them, as you usually have to drop the bottom transmission pan, let it drain, pull the filter and the gasket, clean the pan and the pan magnet, install a new filter and new gasket, then put the pan back on, tighten the bolts to correct specs (or at least don't over tighten) fill it back up and continue on.

Not too many people on here will suggest flushing a transmission, as that could cause more problems then harm, but it depends on where and who does the flush.

Does the fluid look dirty (brown) or have a burnt smell to it? Should be fairly bright red, and smell very close to clean transmission fluid. If its dark colored or smelly, get it replaced along with the filter.

If it's brown change the filter and fluid as Ace suggested. It should ALWAYS be red. Unless it's a manual trans. :D

Yeah, if its never been changed at proper intervals, the dirt builds up, starts to clog things. I would change it, and see if it improves. It may not right away, but it should as the new oil circulates. You may have to change it again after 15-25k if it gets dirty again real quick.

Hard driving can also make it dirtier faster.

Transmissions are just like engines. The oil is used not only to lubricate and cool, but to suspend dirt and particles so they don't collect on the internal parts. Changing the oil then removes those contaminants. Not changing them regularly means the oil gets completely full of those particles, and can't absorb anymore. (hence the color being brown instead of red) Then it looses its ability to be slippery, as well as putting the dirt wherever as it goes through the parts.

So get it changed and see what that does for you. At least its not an expensive thing to do.
