95 transmission issues
95 transmission issues
so i have a 95 beretta with an automatic in it i blieve it is a 4t60e and just the other day it started acting up. i put it into drive and it acted like it was in 2nd or 3rd. it finally downshifted and came out of it then while driving it randomly dropped into neutral it did this twice today as well. the fluid level is ok and the fluid isnt overly dirty but could use a cleaning does anyone else have any ideas as to what this is?

Re: 95 transmission issues
i was gonna say maybe the vehicle speed sensor was bad or popped out when you said acted like 2nd and 3rd but when you said popped into neutral while driving thats a new one to me lol. i would say check the vss, but trans guys maybe 3x00mod will chip in, he knows these trans' pretty well.

Re: 95 transmission issues
the vss would have been my first option if it didnt pop into neutral but im worried its going to be an internal problem

Re: 95 transmission issues
Sounds like it might be the neutral safety switch/trans selector switch.

Popping into neutral is not a good thing, is your speedo still registering speed? if so then the VSS is not the problem. I'd have to look at my book again to see what would cause it to stick in 2nd, I know there is a limp mode but I can't remember what would cause it.
I would also check the adjustment of the cable for the shifter, The range locks are in the trans as well as on the shifter handle and it is hard to get the cable in the wrong position as 13's or bust knows... His was off and to get the shifter in gear correctly it was between OD and D...
The next thing would be to find someone with an OBDI scanner and have them check to see what the ECU is saying when its in each gear to also verify what Geoff stated about the neutral safety switch.
