What is the procedure for replacing a lifer in a 2.8/3.1 motor? Just wondering how far one would have to go into the motor to replace

Keep in mind that these engines are notorious for lifter noise. But if you feel that they need to be changed, at the very least, the intake needs to come off.

Both, upper and lower intakes for sure have to be removed. Then you have to find which lifter it is, pull the rod for it, then remove and replace the lifter. Sounds simple, but its a job.

60* V-6's? NONE of mine have ever made any lifter noise unless they had issue. It's not something I would consider normal in a V-6. Now a Quad, that's a different story altogether......

It's my 2.8L motor in question. 22 yrs old but only 160k Km (99k miles). Has anyone tried Lucas or other oil treatments to fix ticking noise in these motors?

Treatments DO NOT, I repeat , DO NOT , "fix" anything when there's a tick or a knock. Ever. Period.

All these "mechanics in a bottle" do is to cover up the noise. It doesn't go away. If you have internal engine pieces making noise, they're doing it for a reason. Something is wrong.

Yep. I'm still waiting for the magic bottle of fluid that can add metal back to worn parts automatically. Then you won't ever need to replace a thing in your engine ever again. lol

Sorry man, just being funny. Many of these engines have strange noises that can actually be normal. Mine has always had piston slap since the day I bought it. Really bad when its cold of course. It makes other nocky clicky noises when warm too, but meh. I don't let it bother me. It has almost 232k on it. All original. Its bound to have some complaints, like old people that creak and pop when they move. lol

If it really is a bad lifter, yeah you should get it fixed. But most of these engines have little trouble with lifters in general. Usually its crap like timing chains, gaskets, etc. As long as the engine is cared for, it should last a long ass time.
