A/C clutch?

Post by 96B-Mike »

I got a '96 base with 93-94k miles and my A/C still works and blow decently cold..but my A/C clutch clanks/rattles really loud when i turn the A/C on...

I've talked to numerous of people and they said if your A/C clutch is out; you might as well replace the entire compressor instead of just replacing the clutch...

what you guys think?

Clutch is way cheaper than the compressor if you have the tools to do it... just my .02

If you leave it go and let it rattle long enough it can damage the pump and it may seize.
^ That's the super simple answer to that btw.

Well he asked if he should replace the whole compressor, I gave him my simple answer of the clutch is cheaper to replace vs the whole thing and on top of that you dont need to crack open the AC system... That is if you own the tool to remove the AC clutch from our compressors. I bought one this year and I don't regret it in the least... Best $25 spent yet.

Yeah, replace the clutch. Replaced mine and it lasted another 7 years until I took the a/c out.

I replaced my clutch when the bearing seized, got it back together only to have the pump fail that next summer.. I wish I had just replaced the whole thing then. Picked up another pump, but haven't installed it yet. Just a thought.

Just depends on how much money you want to spend and how much you trust the compressor lol. I replaced my clutch in 2004 and never had a problem through when I took out the A/C completely in late 2010.
