sawdust!!? really!!?......in the steering column!?

ok.......i know its not sawdust, but it damn sure looks like it

. i was under the dash the other day poking around and started checking out under the boot around the steering column close to the firewall. now it might be normal but............i swear to god it looks like saw dust in there! i was trying to get a look to see where i could lube things up to stop a squeak in the steering wheel(read somewhere it could be under the boot). i rolled my eyes, took a deep breath, backed out, put the panel up, and went inside to watch rob and big.

what is the dusty material and how do i clean things up in order to try to rid the squeak.

there has been weirder stuff i think. whats under that boot that could dry out and powder up like that?
