93 gtz water leak

Post by 88gtz »

I'm finally getting around to the quad I bought 3 years ago, sprayed the engine off and water came in both sides on the firewall. The previous owner put silicone everywhere on the drivers side, is there a "normal" spot for these to leak?

my leak started at the seam where the firewall and the area under the cowl meet. the drain on the driver side was blocked causing the seam to rust and let water in. i pulled the cowl and got liberal with plasti-dip. i didnt use the aerosol can but used the can made for dipping or brushing on. i just poured a little near the drain hole while holding the rubber flap up. it ran down the outside of the firewall where the sealant had dried and cracked. it also plugged the rust gap at the seam. the tight spots i used a turkey baster to squirt some into the tight spots and the areas i couldnt reach along the firewall inside the engine bay. i did it about 3 weeks ago and have stayed dry since. even after a couple of hose downs and some rain.plast-dip is heat resistant as well so melting isnt an issue and it should hold up to high temps in the bay.

the passenger side could be around the fresh air vent under the cowl.

i also bought some weather stripping that sticks on from lowes for a couple of bucks. i put it on the under side of the cowl to block the water a little from running under. it doesnt seal it off as much as it keeps the cowl from rattling but it does help i think. just be sure to clean everything with alcohol so you get a good bond.

I don't know what I'm going to do with all the silicone that the previous owner did, this car doesn't have any rust but tons of clear silicone. I can't take the fresh air out of the passenger side because of it. Is this the general consensus where these cars leak? Thanks guys

It is a pain to remove silicone. With some luck the previous owner didnt clean the surface before applying it so it can be removed more easily. I discovered some silicone on my quaser one upon restoration - It was not possible to remove it without hurting the paint/primer. it didnt really matter since I was gonna repaint it anyways. But - even not taking care about the paint...it was still tons of work....
Silicone DOES NOT BELONG TO CARS.
