94 Quad4, OBD1? Tuneable?

Post by Quad4Z26 »

Simple question, is my 1994 Quad4 Beretta tuneable?

As in burn a chip/swapable memcal?

If not, what is the easiest way for tuning?

Thanks,

Not only that, but 94 is OBD1.5. That alone makes this a nightmare to work on.

x2 on contacting Racin17 on www.quad4forums.com

Ace, that is not true. I don't know why people keep putting that mis-information out there. Maybe a FEW late '94's got OBD 1.5, but '95 was the transition year between OBDI and OBDII. '95's are the tough year to get codes from and tune.

A '94 will be a simple matter of getting a chip burnt to your specs.

That's odd. I was always told that the 3 of my 94 3100 Z26s were 1.5. The fourth, which was the Quad, I thought basically had a leftover 93 GTZ OBD1 ECM.

Learn somethin new everyday!

Mine was built in March. It is 1.5. But as 88_GTU pointed out, maybe they used a few holdovers. So I was working with what I have been told by others and what I know. Anyways. Maybe it doesn't apply to the Quads. But then maybe it will in his case. I would properly assume at this point that neither of us may know for sure till he does.

And just for shits and giggles, whats the definitive way to know for sure? From what I understand so far:

OBD1 were removable chips with OBD1 harness plug.
OBD1.5 were soldered in chips with OBD2 harness plug.
OBD2 were programmable chips with OBD2 harness.

Or was I mis-informed?

SOME '94's did get the OBD 1.5 as a "lab rat" type of deal. GM was playing with prototypes of OBD II calling it OBD 1.5. Pretty much ALL '95's got OBD 1.5 as the test mules in '94 lived up to expectation , and then EVERYTHING went OBD II in '96.

Btw, if you want to read your codes on an OBD 1.5 vehicle you'll need the following tools.

Actron Scanner CP9145 for OBD 1.5

Actron CP9127 ALDL cable

You were misinformed somewhat.

OBD1 were removable chips with OBD1 harness plug. Correct

OBD1.5 were soldered in chips with OBD2 harness plug. This is Correct and Incorrect, 94-95 Beretta's, Corsica's, Grand Am's, ETC. have a OBD1 harness plug and a removable chip if they are a 4 cyl.
94-95 Beretta's, Corsica's, Grand Am's, ETC. have a OBD1 harness plug, a soldered in chip and the bigger computer if they are a V6.
95 Riviera's have an OBD2 harness plug and a removable chip, and I think 94-95 Bonneville's do as well.

OBD2 were programmable chips with OBD2 harness.Correct

Are you confused yet? :pardon:

Odd. Thought the 1.5s had the OBD2 connector. Guess I will have to look again, just thought they looked identical to the 03 van's connector. LOL

No need to look, both your 94 and 95 Beretta are OBD1.5 with a OBD1 connector.

OBD 1.5 refers to a partial implementation of OBD-II which General Motors used on some vehicles in 1994 and 1995 (GM did not use the term OBD 1.5 in the documentation for these vehicles - they simply have an OBD and an OBD-II section in the service manual.)

This hybrid system was present on the GM H-body cars in 94-95, W-body cars (Buick Regal, 94 Buick LeSabre, Chevrolet Lumina ('95 only), Chevrolet Monte Carlo ('95 only), Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme) in 94-95, L-body (Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica) in 94-95, Y-body (Chevrolet Corvette) in 94-95, on the F-body (Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird) in 95 and on the J-Body (Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire) and N-Body (Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, Pontiac Grand Am) in 95 and also on '94-'95 Saab vehicles with the normally aspirated 2.3.

These vehicles are OBD1.5 but have the OBD2 connecter and are OBD2 compliant.

Cool! Thanks man.... BTW, I looked at an old pic of the red base, that I had shot the interior. Yep, OBD1 connector. Guess I was most definitely wrong there.

Good luck in getting a chip from Racin17 .. he made one for my 94 quad and it idled at 2k and 4 dummy lights came on. He had his laptop hooked up to it at Bfest and still couldn't figure anything out.

He told me to find out if I can swap to a 93 ecm so he can make a 93 W41 chip to work. I haven't had time to make a thread..

That's where I'm stuck at.. so while everybody is on the subject would a 93 ecm work in my 94? The answer would benefit the OP also..
