Problems Starting

Post by angrund0n »

Ive had my Beretta GT 88 for little over 2 Months now. 113k Miles, automatic. Transmission skips 2nd gear but Ive been driving like that since ive owned it. Since owning Ive replaced the TPS, Fuel Injectors, and CPS.

It was running fine untill recently...It just doesnt want to start. It usually takes about 2+ times to start the car and get it running and which it does it will jerk for a sec or two and then be fine untill I have to repeat the process. I have no idea if fuel is going through the pump on the first time but it will always start eventually after many trials. The Check Engine light has recently flung up and stays on constantly and will sometimes go away when driving down the street and the car will sound like its running perfectly but then randomly it comes back. When I throw it into reverse and Im not putting pressure on the gas sometimes it jerks itself but only in reverse. And as I was driving home today I heard a minor rattling and have no idea what that could be.

Ive read other posts and seems like it could be the Fuel Pump, TCC, or just the Ignition. I would love some feedback as this problem is just getting worse and more annoying to deal with especially with winter rolling around which will make it worse ( I assume )

Any feedback would help, Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
Teenager just trying to enjoy his Beretta. :sorry:

Sounds like an engine or transmission mount may be causing some of this. Especially when you talk about throwing it in reverse and it sometimes shakes. That may mean that you have a bad connection someplace, one of your sensors, or a connection problem in the wiring. Possibly anyway. When the engine flexes around, it causes the connection to change.

But it could be a multitude of possibilities. Just going by the basics, you have a rattle and it happens sometimes when putting it in reverse. Might want to check the dogbone mount. It is supposed to keep your engine from rotating in the engine bay. You can check this too, but you need a second person. They would have to hold the brake, and without touching the gas, change gear from forward to reverse, to forward, etc, and you watch the engine. If it moves from front to back a little bit (say an inch or so) that's normal. But if it rotates a lot, (say 2 or 3 inches or more) then you may have a mount that is worn or busted. You can really see this most if they hold the brake and while in both forward and then reverse they use a little gas, so as to grunt it a bit, the engine shouldn't shift much more than it did when changing gear. Again it would be bad if it moved a lot during that.

Outside of that, it will be probably one of the sensors or loose connector. Fuel can be checked by testing the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Otherwise check the spark, could have a bad wire, or a bad spark plug. Even the coils could be bad, or have a bad ground. There are so many things. You can only do one thing at a time. Check the stuff that doesn't cost you anything first, or have a trustworthy mechanic help.
