I'm really leaning toward that too, I just have to get the money together to do it. What I really want to do even more than a 3400 swap is a supercharged ecotec swap with a 5, or even a 6 speed. Thats dreaming though, the 3400, is atleast documented, and not that hard to do. We'll see what happens.

I recently realized that I get a bit of a fuel smell when it's started cold. Could crappy/old injectors be causing this, and the stalling problem? Yesterday it stalled on the start for the first time in a while, and I could smell fuel. It didn't stall or act odd afterwards, or all day today, but once again I could smell fuel on the cold start. What I'm trying to figure out is why I'm getting this smell, and if bad injectors could be causing it, and the stalling. I need to know because I'm torn between swaping a 3400 in, or just "helping out" this 3100. If it's something simple and cheap like injectors, I'll keep runnin' the 3100, if it's possibly something more costly, I'll just try to get a swap started asap. What does everyone think?

You're going to want to use your injectors on a 3400 anyway...so that would not really be a good reason to swap.

I've been looking at the G6 GTP 6spd...but that would be a LOT of work.

not that hard a few people have done it one of them being in a 5th gen Grand Am. you already have the manual specific stuff installed so changing stuff related to that should be minimal.

shouldn't be too hard for you and you are already setup for a manual trans in the tune and it can handle 400+hp

Did you see the hacked Z24 with an F40? The GA is a much easier swap than the Beretta by the looks.

Is the 6 speed auto from the G6 what your talking about? Or are you talking about the manual? I've been looking at some G6's lately, and the GXP with the 3.6 and the 6 speed automatic in particular. I've been thinking to myself, how much harder would a swap of the 3.6 into a beretta be, than say a 3500? I'd also, put that 6 speed auto in it too. They have the shiftable automatic... Tiptronic or whatever they are calling it, and I think that would be nice to have in a beretta.[

Re: 96' Z26

After driving for a bit today, I have a question. Most of my driving was on the highway, and it ran great and everything, but when I got back to city driving, I noticed something. Traffic sucked, so I did a bit of sitting, and stoping and going. I was stoped at a stop sign, and I heard what I belive is the ac compressor. It sounds like metal on metal grinding consistantly. It's worse when stoped. I've heard this a few times now, but this was the worst I've heard it, and it normally goes away after a short while. It was so bad, I didn't think it was my car at first, because there was a beat up grand am stoped behind me, and I've heard tons of 3100's, and 3400's sounding like this before. I had this sound on my old 2.2 in the 95, but I never took care of it, cause when it started, the car wasn't driveable. I'd start it, now and then before I scraped it, and thats when that started. Well anyway... I'm wondering what exactly is this noise? Is it in fact the ac compressor? I've also heard, maybe the ac compressor clutch? What will this effect, other than it being extremly annoying? And on another note, the temp gauge was about half way when I figured out it was my car and looked. I just contribute that to the stoping and going though, but it wasn't doing it when it wasn't that hot.

sounds like the clutches are going on the compressor and will need to be changed and does generally go away when your speed picks up or when ur engine is in the higher rpms constantly

yeah the a/c compressor clutch, like in the pulley itself, goes bad after many miles. you will hear it start grinding and stop as your defrost or a/c system cycle.

I had the heating controls set to off, and the fan on 1. Just fiured I'd add, that nothing was on. My dad just drove it for a while, and it was fine. Haha... Will this cause any damage driving the car with bad ac clutches?

Usually its the bearing NOT the clutch itself. The clutch is only active when you use A/C or Defrost AND the system has a proper charge of refrigerant in it.

And no, it may do that noise for a while, but eventually the bearing WILL fail. I had one fail once. I stopped at a post office to send a letter, got back in and it would NOT crank. The bearing locked up and actually prevented the engine from turning, so I had to have it towed, as you can't drive it without a belt, and eventually got the bearing replaced.

So it won't cause any damage running it like this? What if the bearing fails while the car is running?

Just do an A/C delete or replace the compressor. A myriad of things can occur, from snapped belts to the motor having hell running ,etc when the thing finally locks up.

I don't know much about the A/C delete. Does this work well? What all would I lose just A/C, or would I lose heat and defrost, and stuff like that? I can live without A/C, I just put down the windows, thats good enough for me, but I need heat and defrost for the winter. Hopefully I'll get this taken care of soon, so I don't run into any problems. It needs a few things for winter, gonna replace the battery, and address this issue.

You pull the compressor (yes you'll lose the refrigerant) and lines , swap an a/c delete pulley assembly into place and bam. Chicken's done! :D No, this won't affect your heat.
