94 Quad 4 starting/idle problems

I think he's trying to say the the pores on the individual pieces he removed were not plugged up.
'94 Quad 4 H.O. 5 speed Z26, Red & Rare! 1 of 896 Quad Z26's and of those it's 1 of 167 red paint/gray interior!

Quite possible but in hindsight the cat was clogged, and I think a lot of that has to do with the way the car was running, My wife's Impreza had a cat issues and it went back to the O2 sensor being faulty and one of the injectors being bad so the other 3 were over compensating and who knows what else was going on. And this was an 05 so age can't be argued, end result, cat's replaced, injectors cleaned, one replaced and o2 replaced and the car was back to normal.

Changed the temp sensor this afternoon and the car works like a CHAMP! No CEL, no stumbling, nothing! Such a relief, its been giving me a headache for over a month.

And to clarify about my cat, it was not clogged with gunk but the honeycomb had broken up and the larger pieces that couldn't get out lodged themselves tightly at the back of the cat. Sorry for the confusion. :) I still haven't cut it off and replaced it yet, but now that my other problems are fixed I can get that noisy thing off there and hope the glasspack trick will sound alright. Thanks again for all your help and tips!

Well seems I jumped the gun a little.... CEL is still coming back, however it still works flawlessly. After i changed the CTS I unhooked the battery for a bit to reset the computer, then started it up and let it idle for a good 10-15 mins, to do the idle relearn... After this time had passed, the fan still hadnt come on and the temp was reading where it usually does, about 1/4 up the gauge... It was idling great and I got impatient and took it for a drive without finishing the idle relearn, no CEL this whole time. Wasnt until I was on my way to work a while later that it came on. Is there any way that not properly doing the relearn would set a code? Maybe its the 55 again, or something else, I dunno. Guess I'll have to go get the codes checked again, but at 30 bucks a pop I would rather this not be a regular occurance... Shoulda just bought my own scanner in the first place, i have enough tied up in it in the last month to cover the cost i would imagine...

You have a '94. Just jump the pins with a paper clip. Takes two seconds. A and B terminals. Same thing as using a "code checker" on OBDI.

Or were you one of the guys with the oddball '94 with OBD 1.5?

His being a quad, hard to say there. There was a point out by another member that some or many of the 2.3 quad Z26's got 93 year OBD1 style computers, but the V6's got the 94 OBD1.5 lol

You see, that sponge in my head does absorb some things.

Nothing too oddball about it, this applies to all 4 cylinder 94 Beretta's, 2.2 and 2.3. Our OBD1 connecter has no "B" pin to jump the "A" pin too. This is why a paper clip and normal obd1 type code reader will not work. We have an obd1 style ecm with the removable chip, but the chip is 94 only because it's different internally. It's not obd1.5, but it not quite obd1 either really! lol

The paperclip trick does not work with this car. I've owned about 6 OBD1 chevs in the past, trust me that's the first thing I tried! It's still running great right now, and mileage has returned to normal. I might check a few things and reset the comp again and see what happens, but I know it's not as serious as the original problems...

BTW sc88, I have used your fact in your sig about also owning 1 of 896 Quad4 Z26's ;)

Well here is something to remember, that paper clip trick is jumping the serial data line with a ground pin... Nothing more, so simply touch the paper clip to the bolt holding the OBDI port in place and see if that will flash the SES light... if the ECU is still OBDI form with removable chip, the odds of that code being there may work. I've actually never tried this with a 94-95 v6 and I'm starting to wonder if that would work.

Thanks for the tip 3X00, I tried grounding the serial pin to a nearby screwhead but that didnt seem to work either... Fwiw, it was a kickpanel screw so not even 100% sure it screws into a suitable ground or not though, i just tried it quickly before leaving for work.
