Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Dammit 1988GTU, I was hoping that wasn't true. I think Alpinestar might have the same style Robert has since the one pictured in his for sale thread was the same as what I took off.
Quit a bit early, didn't want to be out all night. But here is what I got done so far.
I was re-reading the recipe for a hot 3x00 build and there was a note in there for a drop of blood from a psycho... Hope mine will do... lol

Short block with crank scraper installed.

going to finish up the timing components tomorrow or Wednesday night then clean up the head gasket surface and get the heads on... Then do the timing cover and get the oil pan on... well I hope to get that far

Well the one from alex is right. It's from a beretta and the car had the rear mount like mine.So that one should be fine.

Jons blood is the same color as the engine block.
Well alex is sending the new jack shaft out very soon.
Your doing a great job jon.

Going to show off some of my intelligence, (or lack of) and ask what the hell a crank scraper is for? I can see that it obviously doesn't physically touch the rotating parts, but what is it for? To sling off oil as the rods come around? Just curious.

Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Exactly, it's around 1mm or more from the crank and it simply removes whatever oil it can. There are Teflon versions that have a tighter tolerance but are also more expensive.
Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
And what would that do exactly? I mean does this actually give it some impact to performance, or is this to keep oil from being slung up? Or what? Guess I don't see the point of it.

Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Oil has a weight when it's on the crank it slows it down, it also prevents it from being aerated so much by being flung everywhere.

Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Looking at the mount Bret's jack shaft might still work with slight modification to the mount. Get both if you haven't Robert.
Bret, which set of holes did it use on the block? Closest to timing cover or closer to middle of block?

The 3.1 1994 Cavalier Z24 the jack shaft came off of has the same style lower rear motor mount as Roberts car. The motor mount slightly jutted out where the jack shaft bolted to the block and overlapped the jack shaft bracket on the top rounded corner. I'm can't tell from the one picture I saw of the mount bolted to Robert's engine if his juts out the same way to overlap the jack shaft bracket. I had to remove the motor mount in order to remove the jack shaft. If his doesn't jut out, I can go back to the yard and grab the Z24 one (I left it laying in the engine bay)... I don't know exactly what set of holes it used on the block, but I want to say closest to the timing cover. I can grab and send the Z24 motor mount just in case regardless if you want!3X00-Modified wrote:Looking at the mount brets jack shaft might still work with slight modification to the mount. Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Just sent you a PM, but YES if it used the holes closest to the timing cover then I do need the mount, his extended out longer and used the holes closest to the middle of the engine, but the sound of the fit is the same, but you might just have the holes confused too so the mounts may end up being the same. I wish I had a measurement to give you to check but I didn't measure it this AM.scd88ga wrote:The 3.1 1994 Cavalier Z24 the jack shaft came off of has the same style lower rear motor mount as Roberts car. Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
Only other concern I have is his current jack shaft is held in with three bolts as you can see in the trans pictures... this one appears to simply just slide in... Will that still work on his trans? I'm hoping the shaft is just different and it's not meant for a different type of trans as well.

Re: Roberts 89GT Engine build.
You'll probably have to change the seal to one similar on the driver side of the trans. There is an o-ring that seals the fluid on the jackshaft, trans fluid goes through the entire aluminum housing.
