Delayed Start... Kinda...

Post by theSLEEPER »

Just wondering if this is common or not. My Beretta has a brand new battery and cranks very fast, and cranks every time. But it spins for a solid second every time.

Is this just nature of the beast?

I keep getting an EGR code, and the check engine light comes on every time I start slowing down to get off of the interstate.

Any relation?

EGR code is simple. You have a plugged up intake breather tube between the bottom of the EGR bowl and the upper intake. Just need to clean it all out. Have to pull the EGR and the throttle body to get in there and clean it. Will need a narrow cleaning rod and a drill or something to "ream" the carbon deposits and gunk out. I had this issue on the 94 and on the 95, but still have to fix the 95.

Start issue sounds normal. I wouldn't worry about that, unless it isn't consistent.

Although, I still don't know what engine you have. My experience is with the 3100 V6 series, not the 2.2 4 cylinder. If that is what you have, then my advice may not be the same, though the theory may be correct.

But I have also not heard of anyone with a 2.2 engine having that issue, so for the moment I assume it is the V6 3100 engine you have, coupled to an automatic.

Delayed start can also be linked to dying fuel pump, do a pressure check at idle and with the vac line off and one under load if possible. Start with a prime check and see if when the pump primes the rail holds that 40psi of pressure after the pump clicks off. if not then the regulator is bad.

Both of these things will also give you extremely high gas mileage since your starving the engine for fuel.

Before you even try that, see if the engine lights faster by waiting for a sec after clicking the key on before turning it all the way to start. If so, the system is not staying pressurized and it is likely one of Jon's suggestions.

I know on mpfi engines it needs to crank until the crank sensor picks up the 7th tooth on the crankshaft before it will fire. So if it shuts off with cylinder 1 at tdc it will likely have to make one full revolution before it will spray fuel.

Yours is sfi and uses a cam sensor as well. It should have less cranking time than a mpfi motor.

I'm starting to think that it's not really an issue. Going to take a video for you guys tonight.

I forgot to try letting the pump build pressure. But I'll let it sit for an hour or so and try it.
