Odd Noise Coming From Rear Window

Post by 2.2H8TA »

This is in my 96 Z/26.
Just went for a quick ride to the store, and while the car was warming up, I put the rear defroster on. It worked great, cleared it up quickly. I turned the rear defroster off before I drove.
As I was driving, I started hearing a noise from the rear window. It kinda sounds like running, or dripping water, or moisture. When I got to the store, I went back and adjusted the rear defrost thing on the pass. side, just put it where it's supposed to be, wasn't off by much, just hanging a bit. Got what I needed, and drove home. The noise was still there.
IT'S ONLY THERE WHILE MOVING, WHEN I STOPPED AT STOP SIGNS, AS SOON AS IT WAS COMPLETELY STOPPED, THE NOISE WENT AWAY, AND CAME BACK WHEN I STARTED GOING AGAIN. THE NOISE IS SLIGHTLY LOUDER DURING BRAKING.
I don't know what it is! Any ideas?

Could be the weatherstripping at the bottom of the window where it meets the decklid. Sometimes it can make noises, especially in cold weather. I know both of mine would squeak and creak a lot when cold, especially if there was ice on that strip.

Obviously if it were water running noises, you would have water laying inside the car. I doubt its that, its more likely your decklid moving against that rubber trim. Perfectly normal.

Yeah the deck-lid is dry, so no water is coming in the car. It's just this noise, it's like nothing I've ever heard, and it's weird how it's only there when I'm moving, and stops when I'm stopped. As I said also, it seems like the more I get on the brakes the louder it gets, then I stop... foot still on the brake, noise is gone. I start moving again, it starts making noise. Weird! It is very cold however. :(

Open your trunk, check the gasket that the front edge of the decklid sits against at the bottom of the rear window. I'm betting that will be wet or something.

Otherwise, record a video with it making the noise? lol Might have something rubbing on one of your rear wheels....
