Ignition Problem

Post by indygurl »

I got my indy home yesterday, the ignition was working fine. Now when i put the key in the ignition it will go to access but not run. What could this be?

It won't physically turn to the "run" just only "Accessory" or you just can't start the engine up?

I had the rods behind the lock break on my 90GT. It wouldn't shut off. One thing you can try is TB/carb cleaner in the lock. That could free it up, but just be sure to get some oil in there after the cleaner dries.
Damn you ACE! Now I have to edit.

it will only turn to access. nothing else there is no battery in at the moment but there wasn't yesterday when i brought her home. getting a new battery today. taking interior apart to get the carpet out to replace it or see if i can get it clean. and tryed to put her in neutral to take the center consol out and the key would not turn. i used the deep creep spray on it but i still does not turn.

My guess is that the rods are stuck. I'm not sure about Deep Creep, but I know that carb spray will not cause problems with electrical connections(a short).
Guess you could try to turn the wheel as much as you can(side to side), then try the key.

Your welcome, easy stuff is about all I'm good for. Hey don't forget to put a small amount of oil in there(no WD 40). Use a good spray oil and just a few shots of that(for the rods, use a staw and push it in as far as it can go). Grease is best for the lock. Just put some on the key, run it in and out, clean the when needed, then regrease and turn the key forward and back. There still should be some lint and dust in there.

i dont think that the car being in gear other than park will 'lock out' the start position, but something easy to try anyways, just apply the brake and go through the gears and back into park.
