hacked/spammed out email accounts?

Post by themadness »

i know some of you are computer scientists out there. i have a bit of knowledge to a certain degree but i cant seem to keep up with all the cyber security stuff these days.

here's my question.
my wife's yahoo account got busted and she is now getting tons of "failure notice" emails from unknown or obvious spam account. she received 95 of said emails just yesterday. unfortunately she uses it for alot of work stuff so she will need to keep the account if possible. everywhere i read says to change the password and delete the spam but this seems to be a little more complex than your regular bot. i suggested she open a new one and forward it to all her contacts but she also uses it for online purchases and convenience stuff. things that are used a bunch but not really important enough to be a contact, i.e. amazon customer accounts etc.

what can she do to re-secure what she has to keep from having to do all the file transfers and sending out warnings? :unknown:

Sounds like to me that the e-mail got submitted or detected by a spam server. All you can do is keep marking things as junk, it will eventually die down. I had the same problem with my MSN account many years back. I wasn't willing to do a new account either, so I kept junking the junk and working at it. Eventually it died out completely.

Her biggest worry however, would be if her e-mails going out are getting flagged as a spam for others. As long as she is able to send and receive her normal e-mail properly, her account hasn't been compromised. Its just under attack by spam server(s) sending you advertising/junk/or misleading/virus contaminated e-mails. Just going to have to send them to the junk folder, not just delete them. Deleting them won't do that for you and you will keep getting them. Have to be marked by the Yahoo e-mail system AS junk, for their filters to then detect and remove them.

With my Hotmail account, I always mark junk AS junk, and if its a scam or trying to obtain info, I mark it as a malicious message instead.

Get rid of your browsing history. That may help a little. The strange thing is that if the account goes idle the spam stops. The problem with that is it takes a week or more. If it's a real problem try Geeks to Go. They may have something to help there or they will help. It's free, but you may have to join.
