any plumbers in the house?
if any of you guys are plumbers and can help me out i would appreciate it.
my shower has 3 knobs....hot, cold, and the one in the middle that switches from shower to spout. the shower wont switch to the spout. when you turn the water on it grumble grumbles then goes straight to the shower head. a little water comes from the spout to start with but not much and not long. i read through a google search that it may be the diverter. its my kids bathroom so i couldnt care less if he showers or takes a bath as long as he washes. is it a problem that may be a leak or something that might be causing any water damage behind the wall.
this is the exact same set up we have if it helps

like i said, if it wont cause any damage or isnt leaking behind the wall i'm cool with. just wanted to get some opinions......

I think it's just a rubber seal flapper setup. It could leak in between the wall if it blows out, but it would have to have a lot of pressure. If the internals failed then it's just not going to change over the spickets. Try some CLR or tooth paste to clean the valve if you decide to take it apart and tamper with it.

you could need a new insert in the center that switches the shower on and off. ive always just had the lever on the spout to pull up for the shower, inside the center knob of yours is probably a valve that can be replaced just like most kitchen taps instead of replacing the entire thing you can buy the insert part for it.
If you take the knob off, probably a small flat head screw driver to pop out the center cover and you will find a screw behind it that holds the knob on, remove that. and with a socket if you can get it on you can remove the insert part and behind that there should be a nylon or something similar diverter valve of some sort that will pull out.
If you knew the make of it you could go into a hardware store and ask for the insert for the shower control knob part for it. if its a mowen or other higher end product then its probably guaranteed for life and will be a free replacement part.
I had to replace one in my kitchen tap, cost was $20 and simple to change.
this image kinda shows what the tap looks like behind the knob.. it will look like a large nut sorta deal, and it will unscrew out of the tap itself.

yours probably dont look like that exactly.. but gives you an idea how it comes apart.. if you pulled it apart and took that piece to the hardware store they could match it up hopefully for you..
i took my old part from the kitchen tap in and the guy took a quick look and said oh thats a blah blah whatever and went to the back room and come out with the part in 2 seconds he knew exactly what it was for by looking at it, so hopefully someone can match this part up for you.

Re: any plumbers in the house?
yeah i think beretta may have the fix. i'm familiar with the standard style, on the lower spout itself... which actually just blocks the water, and i suppose a pressure controlled valve in the main unit just sends the water up the less resistive path!
i imaging the one like you have is much like a 1/2 or 1/4 turn supply shut off... but instead of shutoff, has the shower setting.
could very likely be hard water minerals have build up and jammed it preventing it from turning?

4th one's a charm, 5th one is, beginnning to sound like this is an addiction...

probably build up and over time with lots of use then seals would get gummed up and torn and what not. the seals on the valve are probably wore out maybe torn off and jammed behind the valve.
I would start by removing the knob on the center tap. remove the insert out of it. probably like 5/8's -3/4 deep socket and it comes out normal thread lefty loosey righty tighty lol. and once you get it out you will most likely find the problem.
Some of them are plastic some are metal. it could be cracked if its plastic and the seal is hung up on it.
My kitchen tap was all messed up, our landlords handy man came and put a new insert in it, and it was still slow as hell and water running out the bottom of the spout where it hooks to the base. after he left i took it apart and found part of the old seal jammed way down in the bottom that was stopping the flow.
