Current mods happening to my 88 base.

Post by beretta »

Started getting ready to put the hood scoop on tonight, got the hood changed and done some measuring to see how the scoop is going to fit.

Once i get it in place ill be prepping the whole hood for paint ect.

List of things to go.

1. Change hood. put on hood scoop
2. Z26 front and rear bumpers
3. Side skirts
4. change trunk deck and put on Z spoiler
5. GTZ wheels and new rubber
6. swap out Z seats for the old 89 gt seats
7. Put on new dew strips.
8. Get windshield changed, i have one but im getting a professional to come put it in for reasonable price
9. Axle seals and passenger side cv shaft, and figure out why i have bad luck with cv shafts. maybe needs alignment or bushings or strut mounts unsure whats going on with it atm.

Im sure theres more but im making this list to help remind me as well to show the progress.
Cars been parked since last fall and has a few bugs to work out of it before i hit the road with it again this summer.

Does anyone know if the Z26 fogs and turn signals will fit on the 88 bumper support ? or will i need to drill new holes and mess around to get it all lined up ? would i be better off just to grab a z26 front bumper support and i can sand blast and paint it before install. either way im still going to pull the one off the car to paint it, and the rear bumper support is coming off and sandblasted as well before the new bumpers go on.

New, or just good used? I doubt you will find any new ones made for our car, sadly.

May want to think about checking/replacing engine and transmission mounts. Could have an issue with them sagging and holding the axle out of alignment. That or you have a problem with strut position, may want to have the alignment checked thoroughly, make sure its dimensionally within specs. Something could be bent, holding it too wide/narrow, or too far forward/back so that its causing binding or uneven pressure on the parts.

No, the 88 steel bumpers I believe did not have the holes pre-drilled, but you may be able to simply add them. The newer 90 (or was it 91) years and up had dual purposed bumpers, they could take either style of front lamp assemblies. But don't quote me, I'm not totally certain on this.

I have good used dew strips already, had them for a while, just havent gotten around to changing them yet, the 88 is parked still so i never think about it or have time but i want to get at it and get it done now.

I put brand new cv shafts in it last spring because i had one starting to go but wasnt real bad yet. i drove it almost 2 years with no problems before i put new cv shafts in.. i have replaced engine mounts already on it. i have never done control arm bushings yet because its never needed them.

I has just stock springs in it for the longest time until i got around to changing them, i put 91 cavy v6 springs in the front since i have a 3.1 in it. and it was fine since then for the longest time, at that time i also done an alignment myself and its always drove fine.

the new cv shaft lasted all of maybe a month and started having issues but it wasnt long after that i bought my 96 Z so the 88 didnt get driven much last summer at all so i never bothered taking it back apart. i have cv shafts now from a 94 quad im hoping will fit.

I did notice before i parked it that the steering felt weird like it has a floating feel (body roll) in the front end, but then i could have just been use to the 96 tighter steering and better handling.

Once i get a chance to jack it up and look it over ill figure out whats going on. i havent even looked under the car for the past 5 months at least lol. i just start it up once in a while and move it around my driveway other then that it hasnt been on the road or anything since last fall.

I stripped and scrapped a 94 rusted to the ground a couple months ago it should still be at the junk yard or i know of a couple others hoping they are still around ill just grab the front bumper support off a Z, i can pick that up for like $10 bucks so i might as well. that way i can sand blast and paint it and have everything ready when i go to put the Z bumpers on.

The 94 quad Z axles will fit fine, the only difference is they have the reluctor ring for the ABS. It won't hurt anything to leave those on there, so you're good to go!!! :good:

What do i use to paint my bumpers ? what kind of primer and paint ect..

is there a flexible primer and paint i can buy or something i can add to the paint for flex ?

I think im going to keep the car 2 tone with the Z kit as well so i could prep and paint the bumpers now in my spare time and put them on the car

It says "4. change trunk deck and put on Z spoiler"

Just my opinion here, so feel free to reject it if you wish...but that Camaro scoop does not flow with the body lines of a Beretta AT ALL, and should not be added. I like the scoop - I had one on my Camaro - but it just does not work with a Beretta.

You can add flex agent to paint so that it won't crack, but most modern paints are flexible enough that it is no longer an issue. When I painted my car I called the manufacturer and asked their advice and they said it was not needed. They actually recommended against it just in case the flex agent caused any color shift.

ok i wasnt sure about the flex agent. so if i wanted to paint it with spray cans i can have the automotive mix me up and make the colour i want in a can but its $25 a can. that way i could paint it at home rather then coming home at 7 pm and driving an hour to my dads shop and painting it with a gun and mix my own paint and have to buy reducer and hardener ect.

I want to be able to come home from work and spend an hour or 2 each night and just get things done, ive been so busy at work and the 96 has been my daily driver since i bought it i keep putting the 88 off.

The car is currently 2 tone paint and i plan to keep it that way but im going to change it up a little. the bottom colour i might keep the same, but the upper part i want to go with the blue that you see on the new ford trucks.. or i seen a new kia today that was simular blue to the fords but a shade darker and was a very cool blue lol.

if i just go with the same colour on the bottom i can paint the bumpers and put them on now and drive it and when i can afford to paint the rest of the car then i can just tape the bumpers ect off and giver.
........

the scoop will bend to the shape of the hood, it just sits up because where the scoop dips in sits lower and need to trim the hood.
someone else on here has done it already and it looks pretty good.

I would really recommend catalysed paint sprayed from a real gun...especially if you already have a hookup for the shop to do it. I used the Summit line of paint that was easy as cake to mix and it was cheap.
