Fuel pressure regulator location?

Post by asazii »

I was wondering if anyone can tell me where the fuel pressure regulator is located on a 1991 3.1? Is it hard to change on your own? Can anyone even point me where
I can find information on changing one? Google is not pulling up much. Thanks!!

It's near the fuel rail, if I remember right it is made into the line. You should be able to see it from the front of the car. Just look left of the throttle body and to the right of the valve cover.
It's round and has a "+" on it.
Why do you need to change it?

Well it's misfiring, starts ok cold, runs crappy hot - stalls out unless constantly pumping gas pedal, strong smell of fuel. Already changed spark plugs and fuel filter.

Have your ICM tested(it's under the coils).

MPB, the fuel pressure regulator is not in the same spot on a 3.1L as it is on a 3100

This is what it looks like

its under the upper intake in the center

But I also agree, go through your ignition system first, there is a higher chance that's causing your current issue than the fuel pressure regulator. When they typically fail they stop holding pressure so it runs leaner, not richer. Also check into the coolant temp sensor, Have the ECU scanned to see data and see if the coolant temp is reading properly. If its failed and reading -40 the car will run very poorly and rich.

Thanks, yeah now I remember that. So what is that thing with the "+" on it? I didn't do any intake work on my old 3.1. Which I now find strange because the engine had 213K on it.

The thing with the + is a round thing just to the right of the FPR and I think both fuel lines run by/to it. It is goldish or silver. I took a pic but i can't upload it. I'll try to make it smaller.

Honestly I have no idea what that thing is called. I thought that's what you meant when you posted about it but I don't have one on my car and I can't find any listing anywhere on what it could possibly be called.

Only thing I could think of is the Pulsator but that's located in the tank just after the pump.

Thanks, there was no way for me to get a photo without alot of seaching. My 90 has been gone for almost three years.
I've only seen those things on 2.8/3.1's. Glad that I never needed to replace what ever it is(LOL).
That FPR is like the TPI ones if I remember right(and it looks like most of the time I don't). So don't quote me on that.

Could it be some sort of check valve?
I looked in the 88-92 Chiltons, the fuel system chapter didn't show it.

I looked at the parts/illustration catalog and it doesn't mention it, but you can see it in the drawings. It is built into the fuel feed line they way it looks.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will give a better description of what is going on. Check engine light is on. Car running very rough, stalls at stoplights. I put it into neutral while stopped to keep the rpm's up and prevent stalling. It idles very rough while in D but not really in Neutral or Park. Accelerates and drives pretty rough and feels like it's "stuttering". Engine heats up extremely hot to where the hood prop is almost too hot to touch even after only 5 mins of driving. Had some flames coming out of the exhaust at one point.

Had brought it into a mechanic and codes 41, 51, 52 were pulling. He advised to change the sparks and fuel filter, which is why I already did this, and possibly regulator. Maybe mechanic was dicking me around because I am a female and took the car home to change the sparks and fuel filter as he had quoted almost $500 to change when it cost less than $100 to do it at home. I changed the regulator as already had the part, wow what a freaking job that was, thanks to the diagram above. That obviously did not work.

Do you have anymore suggestions? Maybe fuel pump? Or would you still advise on checking into the ICM and coolant temp sensor? I do not want to give up on my Beretta. I am the second owner, have had it for 3 years and it only has 93,000 KMS on it – roughly 58,000 miles. Has not given me any problems really until this. Also really can’t afford a new car right now. I will post this again in the main forum as well.

Get that ICM checked, then go from there. You have a bad timing problem.
