W-41 crate motors
Does anyone know if you can still get these from GM cause if i can get a new one from GM I might as well go that route for my GTZ, so I don't have to go through the hassle of rebuilding a junkyard motor thanks

A W-41 3400 CRATE MOTOR! HOLLY HELL!!! That's gotta be like equivalent to a LS7 or something.96B-Mike wrote:i brought a 96 3400 crate motor from discount auto parts
In all serious though... please read the title and thread and realize what he is asking about.
Re: W-41 crate motors
well i knew what he was asking for, I'm not retarded...i was just saying that if i brought a crate 3400 it could be possible that he could buy a W-41 crate since they are both older models...give me the year/s and car that the motor comes with and ill see if i can get one?

Re: W-41 crate motors
Don't bother, you can't. They made hundreds of thousands of 3400's and put them in a boatload of different vehicles over a 10 year span. The last W-41 car rolled off the assembly line nearly 20 years ago and they only put them in 2 models over a 3 year span totaling just 1,850 cars... If any NEW W-41 crate motors still exist today, they are going to be hid away is somebodies garage. But regardless, the ONLY difference between a W-41 Quad 4 and regular H.O. Quad 4 is the cams that add just 10 hp. Big deal, yawn... A damn K&N filter and ported exhaust manifold will add just about as much! lol I know I'm going to get the blah blah blah power-band and sounds cool spiel from somebody. But I've heard it all before, so save it96B-Mike wrote:well i knew what he was asking for, I'm not retarded...i was just saying that if i brought a crate 3400 it could be possible that he could buy a W-41 crate since they are both older models...give me the year/s and car that the motor comes with and ill see if i can get one?

Re: W-41 crate motors
Ok I guess you don't realize that a W-41 engine is a specialty motor that was produced for specialty applications and is not something you'll find as a crate rebuilt option... Nor do you realize that the OE replacement crate options are so generic even if they said it would fit a W-41 application does not mean its W-41 spec.
Just like buying new struts for your Z26 they are no where near valved the same as the stock FE3 setup, same goes for a GTZ they are all OEM base level valved so your really downgrading.
BUT good luck let us know how you make out...
W41
The W41 was the highest output Quad 4. The 1991–1992 W41 were rated at 190 hp (140 kW), while the 1993 W41 was rated at 185 hp (138 kW) as a result of the first round of exhaust port size reduction to improve emissions and other changes to the Quad 4 architecture to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). The additional 10 hp (7.5 kW) came from longer duration cams and a different PROM. A part of the W41 drivetrain was a specific version of the HM-282/NVG-T550 with a gear set otherwise unavailable. All W41 five-speed transmissions had a FDR (final drive ratio) of 3.94:1 whereas the 1988–1992.5 LD2 and LG0 transmissions all used a 3.61:1 FDR; the 3.94:1 FDR was used on all 1992.5-1994 LG0 transmissions, but retained the standard HM-282/NVG-T550 gear set.
W41 applications:
1991 Cutlass Calais Quad 442
1992–1993 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX
1992-1993 Oldsmobile Silhouette for Europe

Don't forget the 2 extra valve reliefs on each piston too
... I had no Idea they put them in the silhouettes I thought it was Calais and Achieva only. I think I'm just start buying the HO and rebuilding them and selling them to customers choice, anyone know where I can get a W41 IDI cover I'll buy any if you find em

Re: W-41 crate motors
Not every one had the 4 valve reliefs and that has been confirmed. It may have only been the 442's that had that, I forget? Regardless, that makes no difference in power output.1990BerettaGTZ2.3L wrote:Don't forget the 2 extra valve reliefs on each piston too... Ryan, if you want a W-41 IDI. post a want ad on the quad 4 forums! I hope your ready to spend stupid money for one though! I've seen them go for anywhere between $60 and $200!

YES, GM did produce some W-41 crate engines, I've seen a couple of them pop up over the past few years in the hands of private owners. W-41 cams were available from the dealer as well at one time. But both of these have been long gone for a LONG time!

I'm not questioning you, just making a statement of truth. And the only reason that was on there is because someone edited the wiki page to say so obviously as a joke of some sort.3X00-Modified wrote:Don't question me... Yes, there was those type of minivans available in Europe with a quad 4 and a 5 speed, but they were all low output LD2's and the 5 speed was different (mounting-wise and gearing than and of the US market quad getrags. Also, they were 93-96 Pontiac Transports, not 92-93 Oldsmobile Silhouette's.
Yes! I said 1996 2.3 quad 4! These minivans still retained the older style front end that these vans came with as well. Strange but true.
The W-41 Olds minivan is 100% BS! WIKI Edited!

A 90-92 H.O. Quad 4 makes 180hp and 160tq
A 91-92 W-41 Quad 4 makes 190hp and 160tq
The whole W-41 thing is WAY overrated and people willing to pay $200-$400 dollars for USED camshafts to add a measly 10hp is retarded! I can spend the same amount on a used nitrous kit and run a 50 shot making 5X the added power as the used cams do! lol
