How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
My 94 base beretta's left rear wheel is making a grinding noise again, a mechanic said he was sure it was the wheel bearing.
This happened about 4 months ago and the mechanic installed a used bearing for $90 ! (labor only)
This time I want to do it myself.
I bought a used bearing assembly (the whole item, including ABS socket and 5 lug-bolts) at a salvage yard for $30.
I removed the wheel, removed the drum, and loosened the nuts holding the hub to the axle
I'm stuck because the 4 bolts have some sort of torx head.
Do I need to remove the brake shoe assembly to get the hub off ?
What is the size of this torx bolt ?
If you can specify the steps it will be useful.
[Update]
Actual pictures:
The nuts that simply spin....
This is the torx bolt that I need the size of. (inside the hole.)
thanks

How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
Remove the brake drum, as outlined in Brakes.
If equipped, detach the ABS wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
Remove the 4 hub and bearing retaining bolts or nuts, as applicable and remove the assembly from the axle. The top rear attaching bolt will not clear the brake shoe when removing the hub and bearing assembly. Partially remove the hub and bearing assembly prior to removing this bolt
To install:
Attach the ABS wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
Position the top attaching bolt in the hub and bearing assembly prior to the installation in the axle assembly.
Install the remaining hub and bearing bolts nuts and tighten them to 38-43 ft. lbs. (52-58 Nm).
Install the brake drum.
Install the wheel and tire assembly.
Carefully lower the vehicle.

Do you know what size/type of bolts these are ?
I think its a torx head on the rear side and normal nuts on the visible side, but I dont know for sure..or what size it is.

How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
No I do not. Sorry.
I would assume they are 13 or 15 mm heads.

I've updated my post with actual pictures.
I also found the answer to my question on a google cached page of a page which seems to be deleted now.

It's simple.
1. Remove the 30mm axle nut while the car is still on the ground.
2. Remove the wheel and the brake caliper and rotor to expose the 3 t-55 torx bolts that hold the hub on.
3. Using a 1/2" drive breaker bar with extension, slide t-55 torx socket through the large hole on the hub to loosen the hub bolts. Remove rotor shield.
4. Tap the end of the axle shaft with a brass, dead blow, or hammer with block of wood, through the hub splines to free the hub from the axle shaft. The hub should fall off in your hands.
5. Install new hub and appropriate hardware and your done.
In short I need a T-55 Torx socket.

I just found out I need a T-45 instead :(

How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
if none of this solves the prob try this, replace the backing plate, spindle and hub with new bearings. (you might have to get a alignment to get it tracking strait again).
How do I change the rear wheel bearing ?
Yes it is a T-47, lucky I got the set.
I could take 3 of the 4 bolts off.
The bottom right bolt is covered by some brake part, and I cannot get to it.
I think I will have to remove the brake parts.... i.e call a mechanic :( Arrrg
Any suggestions ?
