Chattery/Squeeky sound from serpentine belt area..

Post by GTU89 »

Okay, ever since we changed my water pump (original, was spraying all over) I have been noticing a light squeek/chirp/chattery sound from the serpentine belt area, I'm guessing it is a pully? Didn't change the serpentine belt because we did not have enough time, so I'll have to do that soon.

It seems to be only when it is cold. Sound like nothing to be worried about?

Didn't notice it bouncing, Didn't get down and look directly at it since it was getting dark, but the belt doesn't seem to be moving at all (other than how it is supposed to)

The belt will be normal, but the tensioner will look like a flag in the wind.
Put a screw driver on the PS pump and the water pump and see if they are making noise.

I made my belt have a squeak in it. I was holding a wrench and I bumped the belt with it while the engine was running. mostly does it only at idle.

Alterantor is fine, looks like it was replaced right before I got it. I'm guessing its something with the tensioner? I'll check the aforementioned stuff then.

Bit of a bump.

I'll do the screw driver thing and post back.

The tensioner looks completely normal, not bouncing or anything at all. It is only on a completely cold start, when its around 20 degrees out. I would've normally just ignored it and passed it off as normal, but I do not remember it ever doing it before.

There is a bearing pressed into the wheel on the tensioner which could be on it's way out. They do sell just that wheel as a replacement, but you have to take off the tensioner anyway. So it is better just to replace the whole thing.
